Does anyone know the origin of this phrase? I'm really unsure how this could be traced but I figured it was a worth a shot.
Thanks. |

Look at the comments about T. Nelson Downs and his tear off sleeves.

Houdini opened with tear of sleeves so it must have been in common us well before him.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was quoted in Reginald Scot's "The Discoverie of Witchcraft" (c. 1600)!
Seriously, despite the fact that very few magis use sleeving techniques, it's the first thing many people think of. So I find that rolling up my sleeves does impress people, although it really shouldn't. SETH

Tommy Wonder even addressed this issue when he developed his version of the Vanishing Birdcage.

Touche', Mr. Palmer -- as usual, you have illuminated a flaw in my thinking!
You are correct, I didn't count the number of "non-sleeving" or "sleeving" magicians. But I have always assumed (perhaps wrongly) that sleeving was not used all that often. Now that I think about it, it is probably used quite a bit to load items into the hands (with the old "put it in the sleeve, lower the hand" procedure), not to mention all the folks out there with holdouts and Vanishing Birdcages. So my logic may stink, but I still roll my sleeves up. SETH

I learned the basics of sleeving from Cal Emmett. Cal taught me how to sleeve a lit cigarette and how to keep it from burning either me or the sleeve.
