I am looking to speak with other men on this forum who are in need of, or have successfully found, 'magical' clothing for the large man.
By large, I mean tall AND big. By tall, I mean 6'3". By big, I mean 4 to 5x (think Ruben from American Idol). What are you guys wearing for performances? I don't think I will be needing a tuxedo any time soon, so forget that for now. Here's an example: I will be doing a few hours of walkaround at a charity event on Sunday, which will be called "Family Fun Day". It is outdoors, and I will encounter many children, and their parents. I am normally a casual-type dresser, but would like something that says "Hey, here comes the magician!" but not "Hey, here comes a garishly dressed fat guy!" (I'm very comfortable with the word 'fat' so you don't have to edit it out, hosts.) I was thinking about going to the local t-shirt printing place and getting a shirt that says "Got Magic?" or "How did he do that?" or both, on it. I think I will inevitably go to a custom tailor to make a vest with all the accoutrements, but that may be a little too costly at this time. So, give it up, my fellow husky friends: What is in your closet suitable to perform in? Thanks so much, Jay |

I also am a rather large guy, 6’2” and 300 lbs. In our PC age I don’t call myself FAT, I’m “Density Challenged” <LOL>(This could be a legal handicap and we may be entitled to something)
At the risk of sounding racist, I have found some very nice shirts at stores that target young black men. Size has never been a problem in these places as most stock 3 and 4XL, I have seen 6XL at some. I wear a tux most of the time but for some shows I’ll go with black “Dockers” and a “very stylish” shirt with or without a vest. I have also gone for the very casual look with a new white T-shirt and a mostly unbuttoned Hawaiian shirt, but only on the right show. Support your local FADS (Fat Anti Defamation Society) |

Hey Jay, from the weather report, it sounds like you may need to wear a raincoat. Thanks for helping us and the children's museum.

Ethnic stores are a great resource for flashy magician type clothes and they usually have larger sizes as well. I wear a 2x and usually have no problems...cheers!---Jimo

Jay,
You could try Casual Male Big and Tall. I know that they have a website under the same name. From time to time they have some unusual designs. It's kind of hit and miss. Custom tailoring is another option. Expensive but may be worth it for you. If you don't want to go the tux/business suit route how about black slacks, patterned button down shirt(colors of your choice) and a black vest. I'm not a fashion consultant by any stretch of the imagination but I hope this helps you. Take Care, Vincent Jay, I just read your post again and I noticed that the gig is outdoors. T-Shirts are great but limited. Plus I think you want to dress a level or too above the guests. But still casual. Colorful patterned shirt may be a little garrish so maybe a solid color or combo of solid colors. I'm really not sure. I'm a big guy and that's the way I usually work. Try to stay away from really light colors, all light colors, etc. Too bland. Anyway, as I said before, I aint no fashion consultant. PM me if you like. Take Care, Vincent |

Well I meet the criteria
1. I have a large coat which makes me look well dressed, got it from the big mans shop 2. I sometimes wear a clown suit which hides all 3. I have a tailor made vest which fits perfectly, I also made a floppy style top hat which instantly extablishes you as the magician 4. Using a topit is impossible for large men, but sleeving and lapping are ideal |

Wizzbang.....I disagree with your thought that using a topit is impossible for a big man.
I am 6'2" and 300 lbs. and I have a friend who is near 400 lbs. we both use a topit. I have a birth defect that keeps my legs from coming together, so lapping does not work for me, but I do very little setting down. With the an open coat the topit is very EZ to hit with only a slight lean forward (more of a shift of my weight)while standing. works for me |

I agree with shadow. I too am 6 feet and tip the scales at near 300. The reason large men have problems with a toppit is because their jacket is too small for them.

I am a reasonably big guy too (although I used to be a LOT bigger but that's another story)
I think a big man can dress as smartly as anyone else, but as to what you wear exactly would depend on the event more than anything. The same rules apply...
