So how does one get started on collecting old magic books?
Amazon, Abebooks, Libris, or what? Bato William

Those, or any magic auction site, which usually has a selection of vintage books.
Check Martinka and KT Magic for their auctions. You will also find many on Ebay.

Then on the other hand, there are very inflated prices on the book sites too. Youn really should compare many areas. After awhile you'll catch the drift.

For the higher-end stuff, I've usually find that the prices are over-inflated by sellers on those sites. There are several good specialists who sell vintage magic books: Byron Walker http://www.byronwalkermagicbooks.com/ H&R Magic (have a used book section) http://www.magicbookshop.com/ Michael Henkel (magazines) http://www.mhmagicmagazines.com/ Auctions: Martinka http://www.martinka.com Potter & Potter Auctions http://www.potterauctions.com/ International Magic Auction (site currently being refurbished) http://www.internationalmagicauction.com Kenna Thompson http://www.ktmagic.com/Auction Also, that well-known e-auction site can be a good source Happy hunting!

There are a lot of sources, and if you attend magic conventions there are always some books available there. I got started by having curiosity. I would hear a magician or two speak of some "classic" book, and sooner or later I would track down a copy and read it. Over time I learned to enjoy them more and more and I'm one of those people who seldom gets rid of a book after getting it.
You just sort of dive in, and start swimming around, eventually you will find your tastes go in a particular direction. I collect books about and dealing with my relative Blackstone, as well as some of the old "classics" that are out of print, but they have to be, in most cases, more generalist type books. Yet, I still, have been known to buy an old book that is solely in a specialized area, if it interests me.

Pssst! The guy posted the question and hasn't been back here in over 2 weeks. If he was that interested, he would have said something by now.

His last post on the forum was yesterday, he may be reading answers and not necessarily responding to them.

Yes I saw that too. You would think a person would reply when they are being helped. That's why I didn't post anymore info. It's like talking to a brick wall, to say the least.

This may shed some light on his want for "collecting" old magic books.

Not sure what this guy is looking for. I sent him a message on another of his "Help" questions. Here is what I said:
"You started a topic on collecting old magic books. You got several responses however, you did not check back in over 2 weeks. So before you ask anymore questions, you may want to go back and thank the people that are trying to help you!"

Thank you, one and all. My mother passed away ten days ago after a brave six year fight against ovarian cancer, and I've been a little preoccupied with that situation.

I agree with the father,
I too have bought books after hearing about them. The more I read the more respect and understanding I have towards our craft. No such thing as a bad book. We can learn something from everything we read. |

Byron Walker, as mentioned before, is a great place, and the prices are quite reasonable. Also check out the used section at http://www.joyalstack.com
Local magic auctions can be great; I've seen some valuable books go for next to nothing.
