Hello,
I am 14 and I am doing my first trade show on Tuesday. I am doing it for my dad. He wants me to walk aorund and do a trick or two for a person and bring them to the booth. Is that what you normally do?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

I have done only two trade show venues in my entire life in magic so I am anything but an expert. I have probably been an attendee many more times than that.
I have seen trade show magicians work and fondly remember seeing Bud Detrich who was gracious enough to do an extra ten minutes when I introduced myself as a magician. So only going on the above, and not knowing what kind of trade show it is, I'd have to say if some kid went up to people in front of another booth and then coerced them to follow him to possibly a competitors booth, I would be royally ticked and my anger would be aimed straight towards your dad.

I wouldn't go up to another person's booth. As I see people walking around, not at a booth.

Denny,
Bring a small table and set up on the corner of your Dad's booth. As people walk by, try to get them to stop by doing a quick visual trick. For example, if you do Crazy Man's Handcuffs (Mike Ammar's rubber band trick, simply step into the aisle with the rubber bands and say to the first person walking by, "Have you seen these new rubber bands?" That will catch their attention. Then go right into the trick. If they seem interested, draw them closer to the booth, and do something at you table. Once you have one person stopped, others will stop also. One more tip: wear comfortable shoes. Trade shows are usually on carpeted concrete floors that are very hard on your feet after several hours. Oh yes, don't forget to have fun! |
