I just got back from a trip to Nashville. I wanted to visit a brick and mortar shop I saw a few years back. I was so disappointed to hear that it was closed. Does anyone know anything about this shop & why it closed. It was one of the nicest looking shops I have ever visited. Sad to see it go...

Just guessing, but probably the same thing that has happened to most B&M's. THE INTERNET!

That would be my guess, too. As a shop owner who had to close a few years ago, I can say physical magic shops are very difficult to keep in business. The mark-up for props is very low and merchants don't have the same option to be credited for unsold merchandise like a lot of other retail stores have. In other words it is very difficult to keep a well stocked store without risking a whole bunch of money on tricks that just don't live up to their promise. If I were ever to open another shop (very unlikely) I would only do it online. The overhead for brick and mortar stores is just too high.
Thanks, Richard |

My understanding is the Strip mall wanted to more than double his Rent...he called their bluff and lost....He still wants to open back up be dosn't want to be raped by the high cost of rent. He's a great guy and is willing to pay fair rent but not to get slammed by it.

Exactly. My rent went from just under $1,000 a month to over $2,500 in just 2 years. It can be crazy.

That is really a shame. Whenever I travel it has become a tradition that I search out a magic shop (if one exists in a town). This one had a shop, a small theater room that would seat about 50 for shows and the local ring, and several party rooms for birthday parties. The shop was clean, modern, and there were very creative renditions of classic posters painted (maybe airbrushed - if I remember correctly) on his ceiling tiles. I hope he finds a good place to open back up. Thanks for the information...

Mark Gray is a great guy, as posted before it closed as a result of some difficulties with the strip mall. I haven't heard much from him about this since, he is still looking for a new home for the shop.
