I'm thinking of doing the old rice in vase trick where you'd stab a knife into the rice, and the vase and everything would be suspended from the knife blade.
I seem to recall that it never worked for me, but there may have been some tips/etc. printed some years back. Any ideas? Thanks |

Maybe a different approach, but I have done it and even poured the rice/wheat out of a clear glass holding only the end of the knife handle. PM me if interested.
You can pass out the glass and have a spectator pour in the puffed wheat, whatever. You insert a knife, hold the handle, lift the glass and tip it so that the stuff pours out until the glass is empty and rattling on the knife tip. Then the glass is lifted off the blade and both can be handed out. I used to do this with a "baking a cake in the hat" effect.

It is discribed in the Eddie Joseph Book, no longer available. It is his idea.
You require a vase shaped with shoulder. Many flower vases are designed this way, and come in many sizes from small to large. |

Brody,
First, you need to make sure you have the right "vase." It needs to be one with "shoulders." I have had good success with an empty maraschino cherry jar. Here is a picture: http://www.foodofthevine.com/assets/item......tems.jpg See how the opening of the jar is narrower than the main body of the jar? See how the glass tapers in as you get close to the "neck." That is important. Next, I use regular uncooked rice. Fill the jar all the way to the top with the rice. Next, make sure the rice is packed in tight. Do this by plunging the knife (I actually use a magic wand -- it is thicker and allows the rice to "grab" it better than a knife) into the rice repeatedly. You purportedly do this to show that it is real rice and that it doesn't grab onto the wand (but you are causing the rice to pack down). Finally, plunge the wand into the jar and lift it up. You can then empty the jar as funsway suggests. Try it a couple of times at home and you should get the knack. |

Barrie Richardson describes how to make it work, along with his presentation, in his book Act Two.

I use Richardson's. A pickle jar or mayo jar work great.j

That's the book I was thinking of. Thanks everybody. Now, I just have 48 more Clausen's to finish off.
