Hello Magic Café,
I am writing to ask a question that has been on my mind for years now. I am not a total beginner, but am not quite an "intermediate" yet. I have read books and watched videos, etc done my research, but I would love to learn from some of the greats out there, almost like an apprenticeship. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Jason |

You might want to start with Jeff McBride's Magic and Mystery school programs. There are always "greats" present to teach at these. It isn't just a matter of going up to a Johnny Thompson and saying "I want to be your apprentice" you have to get to know these guys first, and they have to get to know you and your magic. Jeff's program offers a good start towards that. Also, don't expect one of these "greats" to teach you for nothing, it isn't going to happen.
Alternative, go to major magic conventions. Here the greats often lecture at and attend the convention. Over time you can get to know one or more of them, and possibly reach a point where you can work out an apprenticeship. There are also "fellowships" for study from places like the Magic Castle if you qualify for them.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

Find the local IBM ring or whatever group is in your area and JOIN! Just "hanging out" with these guys will be some of the most profitable time you have ever spent. Also from time to time many of these groups will bring in "Greats" for an evening of teaching, and it's ALWAYS worth the money to attend.
To reiterate what the good Father said, it’s rare that you’ll find someone willing to commit to you without a commitment FROM you. This is true in any Mentor or Apprentice situation. You have to bring something to the table, but it’s often not that far from your grasp, if you’re patient and keep your eyes open. And it’s not always money, but relationship. When I was younger, I got work in a local magic shop. Of course I got to “play with” everything in the shop, and whenever the “old guys” would come around they’d want to show me their latest stuff, or give me tips on handling and routining. Eventually the head guy let me into his private storage area, a literal warehouse of magic dating back to the turn of the (last) century. THAT was FUN! Good luck in your Quest!
...what if I could read your mind?
