I have been looking at the flag staff productions and noticed that there are so many different varations of the flag staffs used by magicians.
Unfortunately I have also seen a few versions (I believe they are knock off versions) that do not fully extend out after the productions. This make it very awkward when it is only extended halfway. However the version I have seen JNeal using looks like a very good one. The video clips showing him producing both the staffs shows the smooth operation and they are always fully extended. What are your thoughts on these flag staffs? Which one is a good version? Why is it good? And who is selling them? Thanks. |

Abbott's has a good one ... I have a General Grant version which is solid as a rock...I think he is sold out of them .

Abbott's and General Grant's are the best. Mikame is ok if you put a very light silk on it as it carbon fiber instead of brass.
Write me if you want a good used Abbott's. I have some good used ones with or without silks. Richard

Shop well! Metal works best for me for a variety of reasons. One of the less obvious advantages of the metal ones is that they have the extra weight needed to get it to reliably swing (slide) and open quickly and smoothly. You want it to totally extend and stay that way. (There are some surprises in life!) All of them "eat" flags. Sew a piece of ribbon down the pole side of the flag and the flag will last many times longer. We stock 36" x 6' solid color streamers (13 colors) that can work with these too as the flag. For corporate and team magic this can be important to use company and team colors. Of course, you can use Sharpie pens on real silk to do company logos. Good Luck! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thanks, Bob. I agree with you that the metal ones have more advantages.

I second the vote for Abbott's. It has always worked for me when called upon.

My "flagstaff" called Flagtastick, came out in the late 70's and received 4 stars in Genii. I would consider it a mini-flagstaff, with its own method.
Now distributed thru Murphys magic and in shops. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu......pe=&aq=f Two demos, one from 1983, and the current one. available at my site as well. http://www.tricks.ws My version was not fashioned after Flagstaff, it was meant as a transposition effect. Custom version has a 18" x 24" silk, although it can have a 36" as well. The stock one is more than ample at 12"x18" Jeff McBride is using two of the 18"x24" versions. He calls it "awesome".

James,
This Flagtastick is a great effect. The new one is even better than the old one. In many cases it is also more practical than the old flag staff. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

It all depends what you what the flagstaff to do. If you want more of a routine, go with Ian's. If you just want a big production, the other is the way to go. Depends on your needs.

I am basically toying with the idea of producing multiple large flagstaffs for the finale. I could also use Ian's flagtastic for my other routines too.

Another idea is the flag tiers. Bobo had a nice routine in his book "Bobo Magic Show". It is good finish to silk production and leads right into flagstaffs.
There are photos of them in Illustrated Magic and on my website. Richard

Re: flagtastick:
I also have a quick release cotter pin that holds the mechanism. Like a grenade pin. So, the whole thing hangs in the jacket or in apparatus. Lastly, the cotter pin holds the whole thing in place and I have toyed with the idea or a stage mouth, where you pull the pin from a distance and have the transition from silks to flag, happens in two places (two units) on the front of stage light area. Lastly, if the apparatus is mounted in a short tube, the release of the pin would thrust the cane in the air simultaneously vanishing silks and producing the flag on flagpole to shoot up and be caught by the magicians hand. I will shoot a demo when I get home from Burbank. One more note: the demo shown is the smaller flag. The flag can be 18 x 24, and I also have toyed with a flag that is cane length (36" x ??), but there is a sliight weight problem. The effect then changes to look more like a blendo transposition. An untried method, but well conceived, is using two units with one flag banner between them. In essence it would be six silks changing to a full flag framed by two flag poles. Film at eleven.

Ian, thanks for mentioning the improvements and I would be glad to take a look at the demo.
