Hi
I am in the market for some fire juggling balls, and I don't know what kind to get. Has anyone experience of fire juggling balls, and in that case could you point me in the right direction. I have seen two kinds (maybe there are more kinds) kevlar coated balls that you will need gloves to and balls from fyrefli that could be juggled without gloves. Does someone got any experience from these kinds? All help would be appreciated. //Niklas |

Juggling flaming wicks is just plane stupid, and your audience will know this.
The fyrefli balls are a far better choice, how ever they are a hype prop, when I use mine I hype them the entire show, then spend 10+ min. just to get ready to light them. Juggle them for no more than 3 min or so, act like there very hot put them out and drop them on to a piece of leather "to cool" The Fyreflis get quite warm, and will get out right hot if you stop for too long. Lamp oil, or Charcoal lighter fluid, no white gas as it gets to hot. ( a drop of zippo fuel will make lighting easier. Fyreflis come in 2 sizes, get the bigger ones, bigger flame and easier to light. If you are going to use them in a show, this is the way to go. If you are just looking for another prop to play with don't bother. they look bad in day light, don't burn that long, Are tricky as hell to light at times, get dirty, get all they touch dirty, and all the other problems that go with juggling fire. I'm glad I got mine, wish I got the bigger ones. but I only use them less than a dozen times a year. and this is my job.

Isn't charcoal lighter fluid kinda smokey, and smelly? I use parafin, it is smokeless, odorless, and has an orange flame.

Good point on the Charcoal fluid, use kingford or some other "Smokeless" fluid and you are ok. The cheep stuff dose smoke a bit.
If you could get them to smoke a lot, that would be cool, but the smoke in the ball would probably smother the flame. Lamp oil= Liquid paraffin. I only use this stuff for the fyreflis and poi. it makes things slippery and not fun to juggle.

What I have seen of the fyreflis, is not that very impressing. It looks like you are juggling small candles. Do you get a better effect with the bigger balls??
I will be using them for shows. |

Have a look at the Mr Babache Fire Balls. You need Kevlar gloves to juggle them but the flame is better than fyrefli balls... Although as a piece of engineering the fyrefli balls are to be admired.
Can I ask why you don't just juggle torches? You won't find a better flame on any ball.

The bigger balls get a slightly bigger flame, but not buy much the cage is mor open and blocked the flame less, so you can see the flame better, plus the wicks can be longer as the ball is bigger.
The flame is bigger than candles, more like big zippos. Still not all that. If you don't have a show to go around them, it won't do you any good. Oh, and lighting them with flash paper...not the best idea, just thought I'd let ya know.

Off topic, but what happens when you use flash paper to light the balls?

Have you considered glowballs? (I know, no fire and very common as well, but no mess, no burnt fingers and juggling is the same as with normal balls) Torches and glowballs are not unusual, but the audience likes them.

The plan was to use them at medieval fairs. So glowballs doesn't fit in that environment unfortunately.

I completely agree, glowballs are no medieval juggling props. if you care for the historical facts, you can't juggle glowballs (and it also depends on how much the manager of the fair cares about historical props.)
However, I work quite often on medieval fairs, and this time of the year, when it gets dark early, I normaly juggle with glowballs. And I have no problems doing so. (If it's dark, and you want to juggle, there is just so much you can do: torches, pois, maybe some other fire props, and glowballs.) I respect the historcal setting, but just to a certain point. If you wear a medieval costume and maybe have some musicians play historic instruments while you juggle, glowballs can be ok on a medieval fair. Many jugglers introduce them as "juggling with burning coals" (just orange balls , no color changes, etc.) It's silly, but it's a way to introduce a glowball in he medieval scene, and it works. |

I was running the balls together, puting a sheet of flash paper threw them, light toss, big flash and there lit. well most of the time, but every so often you will get a piece of flash paper that will burn just a bit slower than normal. you have to catch it and that stuff burns hot.... Not worth it at all.
If you are not juggling torches, you don't need the balls as they are not a substitute, the burn time is way to short to impress a crowd. and unless the ren fairs you go to are all at night, no one will see what you are doing, or care.

There is also a third kind of fire juggling balls called "medieval juggling balls"
see f.e. http://www.passepasse.com/juggling-balls......223.html I have never juggled with them but thouht I point them out bcause they might be interesting for medieval juggling. The screws look like they might get very painfull when burning hot??? |
