Cards Across from RRTCM is the one I perform regularly, and as I'm sure you've all experienced as well.....it kills.

There are some nice sleights taught. But is it just me, or does anyone else agree that Paul Wilson on the DVD is a bit lame? With the exception of a couple of effects, most were very weak IMO. And his presentation bored me to tears. Even the paid actors were struggling to look interested!

I love Thought Stealer but I learned that from Card College 1. I am of the opinion that Roberto's patter is superior and his side notes on the trick do enhance it. I have had very good reactions in random places with this. Once I learn how to perfect the cull and add some misdirection, I will do it even more off the cuff.

I have always found that he builds up his audiences, there is a video of him on you tube doing a gambling routine, and every time the audience gets more reactive, by the end they are blown away and this was a very long routine. No doubt though that he is very dry but that's not always a bad thing, I respect him because he is a very warming entertainer and a master of the cards. |

You guys know that these videos are NOT the same as real live performances, right? I was in Sacramento when they shot this. The objective was to TEACH the material - not entertain the viewer (who is supposed to be watching to learn).
The audience were not paid and were not actors. They were friends of Murphy's Magic Supplies who were kind enough to spend twelve hours in a hot studio! They had to watch all of the tricks in the book in one day and Paul wanted an informal situation NOT the L&L type of set-up. They were instructed to watch and interact with the tricks and NOT to clap after every trick. It was about filming performances, not entertaining those spectators. Paul wanted to simply show each trick in performance - not hit every one out of the park! The audience would soon tire, as would Paul. With only one day to film so many tricks, this was the smart thing to do. As for the material, if you think it's weak, stop doing card magic right now. Slop shuffle is in there, Design for laughter (a version of Dunbury Delusion) is in there, Cards Across, mind-reading tricks, card locations and many more tricks that really fool and entertain people ONE or TWO tricks at a time. As for Paul's dry delivery - it doesn't work on video as well as it does live. He just worked the Magic Castle a couple of weeks ago and, when I saw him, he was getting incredible reactions with the same dry, Scottish humor - and was fooling people VERY badly. Also, one night I was there, several members of staff went to see his act because of the buzz he was getting from the guests. That almost NEVER happens. Too many amateur, beginner or plain bad magicians think you have to be a clown, a comedian or a "gypsy storyteller" to be a great performer. Watch Vernon live at the magic castle and he just did excellent magic with charm and great skill. Vernon also thought the material in Royal Road was excellent. He should. Some of it might have been his. Royal Road is an incredible book for beginners and, because of Paul's project, I went back and reread the entire book. As he pointed out during filming, some of it is as good as anything you could ever learn. Watch the DVD and read the book one chapter at a time! See the performances as illustrations only - the real work (several days of filming) was put into teaching the tricks, which Paul set a new standard for with these disks. His performances are much better on the L&L disks he did but overall his style is very calm, quiet and devious. Of course you'll have to take my word for it until you see him work for a live audience of real lay-people. As for the material in the book, that, IMO is without question, excellent. I came on here to ask if anyone had performed Ladies' Looking Glass for the public? I've done it several times but I'm always amazed no one sees the two cards slipped as the deck is tossed up. If you've done this and someone has spotted it, I'd be interested to hear about it. |

As I said, the sleights taught I had no problem with. But I'm entitled to my opinion as to whether an effect is strong or not. Just because I think these on the whole weren't that good doesn't mean I should stop doing card magic. There's plenty of card effects that I feel are strong & they're the ones I do.

I strongly agree. Somerimes presentation will cater for some and not others. One thing I missed out about the DVD by Paul is that some of the moves have much better explanations in book form and I don't mean Royal Roard, Card College as a text, much better by far. |

Getting back to the book...
My favorites are: Intuition with Cards (I use a slightly different method to mark the card) Ewphindit (as part of a routine where I'm building up the spectator's sense that they are doing the magic) Blindfolded Pack (for parlor type shows)

I did like the one where you give an apparent display of second dealing with the 3 jacks. Nice kicker with the aces at the end. Jacks Wild I think it was called.

I pretty much started with this book and slowly worked all the way through it. Now that I'm getting back into magic it's probably time to start the book over again from the beginning. Thanks for the reminder.
