I would like to compile a list of effects that are OVER $10 and that take less than 5 minutes of practice time.

While there is no shortage of effects that are advertised as meeting that criterion, in every case it is a lie. There is no such thing. Along those same lines, the three most dangerous words in magic are "no skill required."
Anyone who believes that ANY effect requires less than several HOURS of work to present effectively -- the operative words are "present effectively" -- or that requires "no skill" is: 1) only fooling him/herself and 2) someone who should be banned from access to any Internet forum or newsgroup associated in any way with magic and prohibited from frequenting any magic shop or purchasing any magic effect, book or prop online. Unfortunately some of them may subscribe to the Magic Café and/or belong to various magic clubs.

Looking at Youtube and even some of the postings on the Café, there are dozens and dozens.

Although I absolutely agree that we should put more than 5 minutes into any trick when it comes to performance. I think Ted may be referring to the many tricks that require no skill to learn, such as self working effects.
Brass Block Penetration for instance doesn't take any skills, and can be performed immediately. Coming up with an original routine for it could take some time to polish. Selling the idea that you can learn a trick and perform it right away has become the norm for some creator's, producers, and dealers. E used to be criticized for doing that, but now we see others doing it as well. Needle Through Balloon is another effect that I believe doesn't take more than 5 minutes to learn. However, we know there is much more to needle through balloon than just poking a needle through it. I was always told that this is what seperated the hobbyists from the pro's.

OK, here is my list:
Good Luck. While none are sure of the motivation of the question I would say the others did a good job of saying: "Don't buy something, learn the technique in the 'Secret Place' (where they teach you) and then show it to the next person who walks through the door.

I repeat: The three most dangerous words in magic are "no skill required." There is no such thing. If anyone needs ample proof of that, I submit 98% of the crap you see on YouTube as evidence.

It's also become part of the marketing norm of some producers and creator's to entice young new people into buying some of their products. Kids are too busy working hard at getting good grades that they don't have much time to practice slieghts or skills that require training and practice.(sarcasim) So a trick that requires no skill is very appealing to them.

The purpose of my question is to find the names of easy to perform effects with the purpose of selling at a dealer booth at trade shows.

Ted,
Since you asked for some tricks, not for a lecture, I will name a few. color chips such as black and white surprise Svengali deck matchbox penetration drawer box imp bottle coins slides are great for children Posted: Oct 11, 2009 7:23pm Ted, Just thinking about your purpose. A lot of the gimmicked decks out there are often sold at tourist type locations. Such as invisible deck, Svengali, marked decks, mental photography, etc. Those are probably a good place to start as they are easy to do and it is something that as you progress in your magic you can keep using as your presentations change. They also are cheap enough that people might actually buy them. Not too many people will shell out $45 for black and white surprise. They will shell out $12 (marked up price) for a trick deck if they feel it is within their grasp to do. I hope that helps.

I think he's looking for items that cost more than $10.00
Other than the matchbox penetration(Brass Block Penetration)I believe the other ones you mention cost under $10.00 Here are a few as well; Needle Thru Balloon Matchbox Penetration Self Tying Shoelaces *The Raven Lota Bowls Dice Bomb Quality made Finger Choppers, hand choppers, arm choppers. Newton's Nightmare That's all I can think of right now. * I listed the Raven because it is self working, but it takes a good magician who practices to pull it off as magic. Same goes with the other items I listed. Posted: Oct 11, 2009 7:49pm I just thought of more. Change Bag and D'Lites Peace!

You're right Dan, mine are under $10. I guess I was thinking with a mark up those decks would cost over $10.
