I'm practicing the chop cup routine with a small Pringles can and a set of Mike Rogers baseballs (1"). When I put down the cup hard--to dislodge the gimmicked ball--there is an audible sliding sound as well as a slight rolling sound as it hits the mat.
Is there any way of minimizing the sound, or am I being over concerned. I realize, of course, that during the actual performane I'd be talking. (Incidentally, the balls are beautifully made. I purchased them earlier this week when Michael Ammar came through Lexington, KY. The Pringles can is well-made, too!)

Several things can cause an apparent amplification of the noise. If your table is made like a hollow box, the top of the table becomes like a sounding board.
If you use a softer close-up mat, then the ball noise lessens.

Use a plush pad if you can.

It has to be softer than just plush. For example, automobile headliner material works very well in certain conditions. A 1/2 inch thick foam pad with a velvet cover is also good for this.

Get softer covered balls and maybe a felt lined cup?

Perhaps it is the Pringles can? They are very thin walled...

That could be it. I have on old Magic Inc. Beer can and they sold it with felt covered balls to keep the sound down.

I bet it is the can. Is it one of those tall ones or the smaller snack size kind?

I think that the can isn't a good match to the balls. A softer ball or a heavier cup may do the job. Also, go to Dollar Tree and get some woven trivets as a pad - they really absorb the sound and the impact.

The nice thing about headliner is that it is quite inexpensive, but very soft. I usually carry a 6" x 9" piece in my pocket, folded, to use for the chop cup. It unfolds with very little wrinkling.

The wrinkling was my concern with the headliner. Thanks for the information Bill.
You know why don't act naive.

How about using a piece of soft thin deer skin (or a thin soft piece of suede leather) dyed the color of your choice?
Between performances, you could roll it up and stuff it inside of your Pringles can and make it part of the effect. (By doing that, it keeps the balls securely inside the cup between performances and it also provides an excuse and logical motivation for secretly removing the ball(s) from the cup as you are removing the "performance mat".) Just a thought; your mileage may vary. (grin)

This could be tried with chamois. However, even though it is soft, there isn't much cushioning with it. Headliner has about 3/16" of padding underneath it. This is fairly soft foam.

Not only that, it is available in many different colors, and it is quite inexpensive. You can usually get a yard of 60 inch wide headliner for about $9.00. Back when I was retailing sets of cups, I included a close-up mat made from headliner with each set of cups. I still have quite a bit of it that I use for various purposes.

Thanks, for all the great input. I'm going to try the headliner this weekend. It sounds promising.
Juggernaut187, it's a small, snack-size Pringles can. It works wonders, and seems completely impromptu.

To make it really look impromptu, why not try rolled up bills and a "you know what"....This would really look impromptu. I do own some Mike Roger balls and they are indeed beautiful and great to work with. I feel they are best used with real cups. It might rob away the "impromptu" look of the pringles can.
