When I was a kid and making my own props I used a collapsible Chinese Lantern for productions. The closing and opening action allowed me to pull a load inside from between the buttons of my shirt.
I have never seen this in print, but surely someone has some ideas along this line.

I designed an opening for an asian performer friend. A giant Chinese lantern comes down from the flies on stage, drops all the way down FLAT, then when it goes back up the performer is standing on stage, having "appeared" from the lantern.
