Ponta the Smith has a very smooth gaffless 3 Fly handling. When it comes to gaffed 3 Fly's, it's hard to beat Bob Kohler's version.

Ponta has a beautiful routine! My own retro fly solves a lot of the problems with the three fly routines, is done with only an extra coin, and has a complete coin vanish at the end. The two main weaknesses in this type of routine, are that many people make the third coin seem to go across, and then immediately back. This screams "extra coin".
the second weakness, is that many people perfrom Geoff's French Pop incorrectly - you need to use both hands to move, in order to make the move work. Often you see only the hand with the coin moving, and there is a lot of heat on the coin. I have also seen many routines, where the secret transfer of te second coin into the other hand just looks lame. It is obvious that you are substituting one coin for the other - it is NOT a good illusion, and I have yet to see a magician perform that well. Both my routine and that of Ponta have found a way to eliminate these problems, although Ponta's last vanish is not complete. I would be interested in knowing a source that shows Geoff's vanish predating Geoff. He came up with that in the early 80's, and it was underground and unpublished, until Kenner released it without permission.

JT told me that he saw Latta do the French Pop in 76, before I did. My routine is in my 2004 lecture DVD, the COinvention lecture notes, and on the New York Coin Magic Seminar DVD vol 1 - a 2 disc set on coins across (27 routines on all aspects of coins across - palm up, palm down, gaffs, no gaffs, extra coins, no extra coins, sit down, stand up, ways to get the last coin into the specator's hand, a virtual course on coin magic, using the coins across plot as the base.

Quick question: Obviously the final coin is done via the French Pop, but the first two use a similar move; not exactly the same but the dropping into FP while apparently tossing the coin - do those qualify as the French Pop also? Thanks! Jim |

The trick does not use the French pop. Most people do some sort of bluff vanish for the last coin, with one hand moving the coin into finer palm or somnewhere else. The French Pop needs two hands that swing upwards in unison. The other hand provides the misdirection that makes the move so effective. Without that movement, it is NOT the French Pop. See Latta perform the Trick with three coins to see the french Pop in action. It should be one volume one, and in my opinion, is the best trick Latta ever came up with (although his copsilbrass aint too shabby either, and broke new ground for that genre of effect!)

BTW, I just played all the Latta routines on the NYCM DVDs Volumes 1 through 4 and did not see anything at all related to the French Pop. I don’t have time to look through anymore right now but if you have a better idea of which set it is on I can save a little time. Thanks! Jim |

Jim, as Mike says, it's used in Latta's "Trick with Three Coins". Beautiful work!

Also I guess I was expecting Geoff to show it and mention it during the Explanation phase, but he didn't refer to it as anything special at all. A humble coin master, he is! And you're right of course; it is indeed beautiful! The only thing that still puzzles me a bit is why it is considered a French Pop only if both hands are involved as Geoff did. I mean, I DO understand that like any vanish, the effect is lessened - and sometimes exposed as well - if it is not enmeshed within a routine. But I have seen a very similar sleight performed within routines without the other hand directly involved. What is that called then? Thank you. Jim |

A bluff vanish, or they are trying to do Latta's move, incorrectly.

Actually, I think R Paul Wilson's is the best bang for the buck for a pretty good routine, but prefer the Kenner routine for better cover in more performance conditions.
