I remember when I was at the opening for the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas. They gave this big ballyhoo for Lance's premier there. I over heard Carl saying, "They never did this for us."

There is an error in the obit. Carl never called himself "The World's Greatest Magician."
His sign said "The World's Greatest Magishen." It was one of his gags. He would let the banner unfurl, then say "Those other guys don't know how to spell it."

Thank you Bill for responding to this, I was beginning to worry if people forgot this wonderful performer. I am holding in my hand the book, "The World's Greatest Magic," by Hyla M. Clark . I'm looking at the photograph of Carl doing his act back in the mid seventies. He is standing in front of a magicians table with a large banner that reads, "BALLANTINE THIS WORLDS'S GREATEST magician."
Funny gag. |

He was the greatest magician to never perform on stage!
Kind of makes me sad to think about who might be next.
Magic! The quicker picker-upper!

I don't think anyone will ever forget Carl Ballantine A.K.A. Gruber. Very funny man and loved magic. Rennie

Ballantine and Dom DeLuise were always two of my favorite "classic" magic acts.

Does anyone know more about Ballantine when he used to perform a classic type of act like Cardini? There's a great picture of him at the castle during those times.

Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

Ballantine was a pioneer in comedy magic, and made magic that didn't work right still work like magic. Flydini, the Great Tomsoni, and others made magic that worked like magic, funny. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

I'm shocked, what a great guy that we have lossed. I had an opportunity to meet him at the world magic seminar when he won his much deserved award, and being such a fantastic guy, we ended up spending many hours together, he gave me insight into a lot of his thinking and even taught me a lot about the horses. His sister was just as nice! I'm also saddened as I very much hoped to spend more time with him. So time continues as do each of our lives, make the most of every minute!

Noble1, I think I do understand what you mean.
Flydini (Martin) was just hilarious --- but the techniques he used were straight macgical techniques. What made the act funny was the unexpected use of strange body parts. Ballantine, on the other hand, did everything wrong and the act never actually "worked" at all. In order to understand the insane humour of his act, you had to have previously seen other magical acts that succeeded in conventional terms. That's why in the Cosby show clip listed above, (where Bill Cosby is watching with a bunch of kinds), only Cosby is cracking up. The kids don't get the jokes because they have no comparision, no reason to expect a rabbit will come out of the hat or a dove will come out of the paper bag, so they don't crack up when it spectacularly doesn't happen. In other words, Ballantine's act works best on audiences who either are magicians or fans of magic shows. I loved his stuff. He did a bit of a Jimmy Durante intonation, a lot of Jewish humour -- he was just all around great. |
