Welcome to the Café!
What kind of magic do you like? Cards, coins, rope, money, stage? (The list can go on forever, but these are the most popular) - Alex (not you, me !)

Ok, so you want to do card magic...well, this is going to be fun starting you off.
Rule #1: BUY A FEW *BRAND NEW* DECKS Get Bicycles (if you are in the USA or Tally-Ho's if elsewhere or if bikes (short for Bicycles) are too expensive in your area). Rule #2: DO NOT USE CHEAP PLASTIC CARDS I know you are now saying "but isn't that the same as rule 1?" Yes! See, the funny thing about card magic is when you learn to do sleights, the actual texture of the cards will make a differance. If you are starting out magic and you use an old deck or a plastic coated deck or an old plastic coated deck, you will not be able to perform certain effects and you will get frustrated and quit early. Rule 3: YOU CAN NOT BECOME A DAVID BLAINE OR DAVID Copperfield OVERNIGHT! Infact, you probably never will, nor will I. The key to magic is being yourself when you perform, do not try to copy someone else's style. Your style is YOURS! Trying to become them will slow you down to a halt. In addition, "perfect practice makes perfect", hence you will need to spend atleast 2 or 3 hours a DAY practicing. Do you think professional sports atheletes give up practicing? No. Just like that, magicians need to practice and maybe even break a sweat (which infact will help! Why? When you start performing, you will get nervous and sweat). Rule #4: BE ONE WITH THE CARDS. If the cards become "part" of you, you will not have to stare at your hands to do "moves" when you are performing and like that, you will be more relaxed and will be able to joke around (if that is your style). Rule #5: Video and/or Book Royal Road to Card Magic, hands down, is probably one of the best card magic books out there for you to start out with. As for videos...wow...lots of choices. I would suggest Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles collection. They are VERY EASY yet VERY POWERFUL effects which after some practice, you will be able to perform them without hassle. In the process, you will also get to see how effects work. Jeff McBride offers his Art of Card Manipluation videos to show you how to do stuff such as one hand "cuts" (charlier cuts), fans, color changes, and many other flashy card effects. If you get only one of the McBride videos, get #1 and that will last you a good 2 or 3 years to master. Rule 6: DO NOT LET YOUR FIRST PERFORMANCE BE YOUR FIRST PRACTICE SESSION. You must practice many many many many many many...times before you show a single person. You probably will "lose" a deck to practice. Rule 7: MAGIC IS *NOT* CHEAP NOR EASY. So you want to vanish a 747 or fly high into the sky? Not happening! 20 years from now, maybe, but not now. Illusions such as those take many years of psychological study and are definately not cheap. If magic is going to be your hobby, it will take a portion of you income to maintain your appitite for new effects, books, videos, and whathavenots. If you want to become a perfessional magician, first become a hobbist and see if you can handle it. I hope I covered everything. Good luck! - Alex Ps. Modern Coin Magic by Bobo would be a good coin magic book, I can't provide much help on coin magic, yet.

Cards are the easiest form of magic to star of at and is the same i started with. Many internet sites offer free tricks. Card Trick Central is a good place to start off!
Don't practice another sleight or move until you have perfected the one you are doing. A good starter book is the Royal road to card magic. Good luck Chuds |

Listen to the advice of the experienced. Apply what they are saying before discarding the advice.
