I am imposing an interesting question. What’s your theory on how Houdini escaped from the carette? J.C. Cannell and Kalush gives the preposterous explanation that he used a miniature saw and a can opener to cut his way from the bottom. At least Kalush gives a better explanation on how to got the tools inside of the cell. He suggested that Houdini wore a sixth finger. I don’t see how with the thorough going over he gave Houdini that he could have gotten away with it.
What’s more laughable was that Cannell suggested that after Houdini and Kukol was stripped searched, the burden to sneak the tools fell upon Bess. Cannell states that Bess passed it to her husband via a kiss. Do you know how hard that would be to do? And the sawing would be very difficult with the small saw that was suggested. It would take forever. And not to mention that the Russians would have notice the cell being destroyed. Of course they didn’t have a key to open it, just to lock it, so maybe it was not noticed until it got to Siberia. And that brings up another point. If they only used one key to open it and one key to lock it, how did the police open the cart when it was shipped backed to them? That door could not have stayed open during the twenty-one day journey back to Moscow. The picture Kalush show’s of the dreaded carette shows the window to be bigger than the one shown in Houdini’s posters. But, he would have had a tough time undoing the chain that the Russian police placed around it. However it was done, Houdini did escape. I just want to know if anyone else has given this much thought. |

I think the whole "two key" claim was just a publicity horror story.

I agree. In fact, a lot of what was written about this escapade I think was just publicity.

I have read, though I don't remember where, that the art work surrounding that particular vehicle was exagerated, and the real thing was much easier to beat than people thought. Honestly, the average person locked up for legal reasons, (innocent or guilty) does not even think about escape. They just assume that they are stuck and accept that as fact. This is why handcuffs are believed to be undefeatable by john public. The media has done us that favor.

Houdini took advantage of the 'slow media' of his time.
Whatever he claimed in one country (or even coast) was hard to check out by a reporter/researcher in another. This was one of the major 'secrets' of his challenge act system.

That's what made him a legend. You can't do that today with the world of instant media. You couldn't come up with enough stunts to last your entire career. I think that's why David Blaine and Criss Angel burned out.

Cliff, I think you are recalling the account in Doug Henning's book on Houdini. At any rate, I am sure Henning remarks on the artwork viz a viz the placement of the window. Mtpascoe, you should try to find that book.... Best, Paul :stout: |

Yeah, I have that book, it's "Houdini: His Legend and His Magic". It was Milbourne Christopher that Henning quoted about Houdini covering his tracks by making the window of the carette smaller.
I have read most of the theories and observations written, but I was wondering if those who do escapes on a regular basis have an opinion on the subject. |

I am not believing all that I have read, I was responding to Paul's comment. In fact, I question all of the theories that have been posed about the carette. I just wanted to start a debate with those that might have some kind of theory to how he might have done the escape.

In the case of Houdini you have to look on the obtuse.
Was an escape even made ? Was it theatrical licence ? Was Houdini capable of selling a complete lie ? |

With Houdini you never know. I can't find anything on the internet about the carette unless it's linked to Houdini. The only picture of it I've seen was in Kalush's book. There doesn't seem to be any articles about the transport cell other than what was written by the magic community.

It was just like a jail break. If there is any veracity to the poster, it indicates to me that Houdini smuggled in the tools needed--a ratchet tool which would hold a key and extensions so that the tool can reach two feet or more--in the manacles he is wearing. Franz Kukol may have held a blanket in front of the door to hide Houdini's methods. Joe Holland has the tool that might have been used.
I have just posted some shots of Franz/Frank on handcuffs.org under the post "funeral." |

I heard Houdini used a Nicotine Patch to help him escape his dreaded cigarette addiction.
Oh wait. I'm sorry. You said "dreaded carette". My mistake. |
