I wonder if the old-fashioned terms "simulation" and "misdirection" might apply here.
Psychologists refer to the brain's tendency to fill in missing information, such as breaks in circles, as "accommodation." This is more of a subtlety than a sleight.

Are the people that do this that are considered masters ( Slydini ), are they just natural at this and it can't be learned by just anyone? Or do you have to be mentored personally, as Slydini did with Cellini?

Take a look at page 118 of the original bound version of the Stars of Magic. Slydini uses this principle in one of his classics. He uses it again on page 126. The first time is with a cigarette, the second with a coin.
I believe a person with normal intelligence could tell from the photos exactly how this works. With a little practice, I'm sure almost anyone could do it, as long as he did not project any "magician's guilt."

I recall Tony Veriglio's offering a few months ago in which he pulls out a handful of change, pokes around and says, "I think I'll use this nickel," puts the other coins away and then vanishes the nickel. Of course, he never took it from the pile at all.

That was the one that I was referring to in Bobo. It's overplaying it to name the coin, though. It's completely unnecessary.

One of the recent free offerings on Sankey's website did this, too - Skutt brazenly displays and then vanishes a quarter in his fingers that isn't actually there at all.

For me, it is essential to create a Pattern in order to support Implication and Inference. Say you select two nuts from a dish after dinner and do an effect or two -- you pick up a nut in the right fingers and drop it in the left hand. Later, you need three more nuts, so you could put one, two, three into the left hand --but only drop two, having never taken the third from the dish at all. I wonder if faking the second or third drop is better. My intuition says the second, as then the first and third can be quite visual -- both 'confirming' that a nut was dropped on the second movement also. It helps if your story line is synchronized with the fake drop as another form of Pattern.

That's all covered in the Slydini material.
