Hi there
Im writing a routine and Id like to know if there is a liquid that you can put on paper that resists fire. Kinda like the the opposite to the marketed solution 'fuse'. Im not asking for a recipe, just if there is a ready made commercial solution. Lauren |

Soapy water.
Antifreeze. Water. Hard to understand the question. Is the paper to be dried for later use? Should it be wet for the act?

Soak the paper in approx 50/50 mix of methylated spirits and water. Stir in a small amount of salt to make the flame visible (orange) as the alcohol burns very cleanly. The methylated spirits will burn away, but the water will stop the paper from burning. You will be left with slightly damp paper as most of it will have evaporated if you get the mix right.
I used to perform this regularly with a $5 note. This was before they got rid of paper money here in Australia and replaced it with plastic. The lower denomitations went first and they slowly worked their way up. As a result, I started doing it with $10, $20, $50 and eventually $100 notes. It has been years since now since I've been able to do this with Australian currency.

Ahhh, now I get it. I was thinking something completely different.
Hey, maybe you could get some of our crappy US dollars at a currency exchange?

I don't like using other currencies because the effect seems to diminish. The powerful effect of using money is what is at stake if you lose/destroy it. Who cares if it is money I can't even spend here?
Also I'd rather borrow money from a spectator. Most are unlikely to carry around foreign currencies.

Ammonium phosphate dissolved in water (1 pound ammonium phosphate per gallon) can be used to fireproof cloth, so it is very possible that the same solution can be used to almost permanently fireproof paper. I've never tried it with any kind of paper product myself, but I know you can soak fabric in the solution, hang it to dry and then hold it over a flame and it will not burn.

If all you want is something easy that burns , but dosen't burn the material, I use regular rubbing alcohol & water, 2 parts alcohol to 1 part water works great.

Here in Germany theatres need to "proof" their stages and anything on them against fire.
I was Produktionsleiter for a dance evening in a Stadttheater. One choreographers piece needed the stage covered with paper and because it was in the "small house" stage we didn't have firemen. Hence all the paper needed to be fireproofed. This was an entire mornings work for my scenery assistant and the paper came back feeling slightly damp. It was in fact dry but felt more like cotton paper and was more opaque than normal paper. It certainly stopped the paper catching light though. Often pieces of paper fell on stage lighting and the stage technician held a lighter to a piece to check it had been proofed. Not a flicker! |
