Hey guys, I get asked a lot about traveling with doves and all things surrounding this subject. I made a quick little YouTube video while on tour right now so you can see how I travel with them in the hotel and whatnot...hope you like it:

Great ideas. Traveling with doves is always fun. Last month I was in NYC and the hotel people heard the cooing and called security. I had to explain to some rent a cops why I had 10 birds in the bathroom in a portable cage, and why I had make up on. (I just returned from the show) Now granted, I don't wear anywhere near as much as makeup as Dan Sperry but still... The guy goes, why do you have eyeliner on and what the hell are you doing with those birds? Why are those birds neon colored? hahaha.
I like your travel carrier, I have one very similar also made from a dog carrier. Steven |

Yeah I used to travel with 12 back when I had 10 in the act, now that the act is shorter and I've weeded out the "fluff" I'm down to 8 doves in the act...still body loading all of them like an idiot...but I do have the option to swap down to 7 doves if need be...it makes a world of difference in traveling too though in regards to headache of having all those birds plus weight in seed, mess, etc.

When you travel into Canada, how do you get your doves in and out, Papers, License??? Permits?? Vets?? Do they have to stay in Canada, or do you borrow doves in Canada?

I ALWAYS borrow doves when I travel out of the country. In this case for Canada I am using my own doves as I did the first time I toured with Murray Hatfield. There are lots of papers, local vet visits, USDA, fish and wildlife, and they all come with price tags as you can imagine. It is definitely not easy and not for everyone.

Dan,
Its much lighter to travel if your doing all body loads. I have a second act I do a lot now that's no body loads at all but I need a hat for hat steal, small mirror box, drawer box, fire dove bag, fire cage, balloon to dove tray and a bunch of other things. Its okay for local shows but I wouldn't want to fly with an extra case full of all that crap, then what if they lose your luggage? Sometimes I don't think people notice the difference much between the body loaded act and the no body load acts, either way your producing a lot of doves but the effects are much better with loads so I think I prefer that act myself. Still, its good to have both if you can I suppose, and I do have to say I'm a lot more comfortable without all the body loads. Which act I choose to do really depends on the setup time and situation now. I've been thinking for a really long show, like when people ask you to do an hour or more, I could do both acts since none of the effects really repeat in each act, like open with one and close with the other or do the second after a short intermission in the middle. Loved the video Dan - I was kind of curious what I would do if I would travel far enough to have to use hotels and I wanted to do Doves. Nice ideas. My first carrier for Doves was actually a Cat Carrier that my wife helped me convert into a real nice Dove Carrier. I like the perches you made in yours better.
Thanks for the info. Mike

Thanks for sharing this Dan. The travel cage is a great idea. Although I don't know how you keep them from fighting each other while they travel along together.

Like Christopher, I have wondered about the fighting issue too.
Thank you Dan! I have not got to watch the video yet, but when I get access to a to a computer with high-speed internet, I will! I'm sure there will be a lot that will help me. Best wishes! Regan

Hey Dan,
I am deaf, so I have a question here. The black line on the dove stand, I am assuming that is there to help the doves see the perch. Is that correct? I travel with four doves, and my carrier actually custom fits into a duffel bag, so I can just carry on when I fly. Thanks, sam

The black stuff is actually grip tape to help them from slipping off the perch if they're flaying at it with too much speed behind them...
I used to be able to travel with my birds in the plane, but I ALWAYS use that spot for my parrot now. I don't trust him traveling alone, so the doves get checked under the plane. Plus, good luck trying to squeeze 10-12 doves under the seat in front of you and not **** off any PETA folks...

Thanks.
That was funny. I can see it now, shoving the doves under the seat. Yes, it would tick them off. Thanks again, sam PS I missed your show at the Trick Zone Theater in AC. I was performing there 2 weeks after you. I am planning on being there again next season, so if you're there again, I will make the extra effort to come down and heckle you during the show.

Just had the chance to watch your vid, Dan. I know a few people that let their birds hang out in the shower. That way, they can just rinse the droppings down the drain.
I found it interesting how they all ride in the same carrier. I figured you'd at least have the colored bird separate. I guess the color doesn't transfer? Oh, and considering the dander/health issue, how does that factor with having eight doves in your hotel room?

Just got my copy of Flight Club. Great stuff. Just reading the part about international travel gives me a headache, let alone going through it.
I think I'll recommend this book as the first book to read for anyone wanting to get into dove magic from now on, even before the Marian Chavez book. |

Thanks, Alexo, much appreciated as always in your honest reviews.
Michael - apparently they've failed to ask, "Have you ever tried to wash dove droppings down the drain after a day of letting them sit in there?" when they recommend leaving them in the shower - not as easy as it sounds, plus you also have the issue of where to feed them - if it's in the shower, the seed can/will clog the drain which leads to even more fun. haha I carried non-toxic cleaning wipes - actually baby wipes - with me and would wipe down their carrier daily after letting them out in their new little portable playpen. Also, as you saw in the video, the carrier was larger than it needed to/could have been, but I wanted to provide some comfort for them on the long tour bus rides, so this space kept them from rubbing too much.
