It is a pleasure to have with me a few of the photos taken back in 1980 from DANTE. I am always very very proud that he was my father. Will never forget you dad.

Okito said that penetration effects are not strong magic for audiences, and all of the "Grandma's Necklace" type routines are penetrations. I've long thought that there must be another trick which could be presented in the Lazy Magician format, but which would be stronger. I thought about The Sands of the Desert, and it certainly could be staged that way, but I never got around to trying it. I've seen this done live by Calvert, Bill Larsen (as Dante) and Werner "Dorny" Dornfield. The presentations were done well but got just a modest round of applause from the audiences.

Let's talk "off the air" sometime about Dorny's presentation of The Lazy Magician. In all of our (nearly) all night conversations, he never mentioned doing it. As you no doubt know, he once did a "sub" tour for Bob Roth's Southern School Assemblies. (I think it was in the '60s) TLM would have been a good time filler for him on that tour. I asked him once what he did, but he couldn't recall specifics. I always have a piece of rope the same length as the PN long rope.in the prop case. I can do TLM with the four poly "silks" from Sympathetic, if I need to pad. Down the road!

Hi Dick,
I only saw Dorny do it once and that was at Abbott's. Maybe it was the same year that Bill Neff performed and you didn't attend that convention. I really don't like the way that Calvert starts this trick. One girl has the wand in the center loop of the rope which is doubled in half. The other girl has her rope also folded in half and places the center loop over the wand. I think this gives the whole thing away! You need to start with the two ropes both stretched full length between the girls. The magician puts the wand on top of the center of the ropes and working with the assistants ties a single knot which is pulled tight. I also prefer the versions where the four scarves are not used, but something like coffee cups are. The ropes are threaded through the handles. To Michael Baker: Yup, you're absolutely right. It's a case of "Do as I say, not do as I do." Perhaps Okito was related to Walt Whitman who said: "Do I contradict myself? Then I contradict myself. I am vast; I contain multitudes." Dennis "Denny" Loomis

If anyone is interested in getting "Dante's Lazy Magician" Trick, it is still available from Rice's Silk King Studio. It is called "Rice's Triple Knot Escape", available in 2 sizes to fit many wallets. Don't forget, Ruth mentioned her on the Café, to ask for the slightly irregular silks, and she will discount the items, I know it is a very good discount and worth asking. A side note, if you can find anything irregular with the silks you receive, you must be a silk expert, as I could not find a weave thread out of place.
