Hiya Gang!
If someone uses a "Buy It Now" button on my site to purchase a PDF- is there a way to have Paypal automatically send them the PDF? Thanks! jamie

You can write a rule or filter in your emil to do so based upon the text of the email notification that you get from PayPal that a purchase had been made.

Actually, Paypal has a feature built-in standard.
When you make your "Buy" button for your website, you are required to fill in all product details. At the bottom of the page, there is a "Confirmation Message to Send" that will be sent to someone after their purchase has been made. Typically, this is used for the "thank you for purchasing" blah blah blah. If you instead include a link so some REALLY obscure (and unsearchable) filename on your own webserver, they can instantly download it. Much easier than setting up a filter with a file-attaching auto-responder (which will usually get blocked by firewalls and spam filters). Enjoy. |

True, but making ny aspect of a website unsearchable isn't quite aseasyas it sounds. There is the robots.txt file, but you'd have to manage the code in such a way as to insure that it doesn't impact any other portion of your site.

I totally agree, Dodd.. so, further thoughts:
Well, two ways to go about this specific case: If you create your robots.txt file, you can set the directory (sub folder containing your PDF) as private and unsearchable... a bit of coding work, but seemingly foolproof... But I'm fairly sure if you're providing a link STRAIGHT to the PDF, aka having no page on your website that contains the link (clarity: the ONLY link to the PDF is in the PayPal Auto Responder E-mail), and it's obscure in location (ie... http://www.mywebsite.com/images/media/extra/omgwow/mZBC75k3/poker808/mynotes_rule.PDF), no one would be able to guess and definitely couldn't just "browse" your site and find it. Just make sure your FTP is password protected, and (in your case) you should be peachy keen. ^_^ |

In this situation, though, I guess there's nothing to stop someone from sending the link to someone who hasn't paid for it? Well, I guess they could forward it to someone if they just received it anyhow, but it seems like it might be "menatally easier" for someone to send another person the download link as opposed to the actual product. Does that make sense? ~jdg

This is certainly one of the ideas of digital distribution. There is a great book out there that you should all read called "Free: The Future of a Radical Price" by Chris Anderson that discusses this in detail. Fascinating!
