I think every hypnotist should consider reading this. It disturbed me many years ago when I first read it. I picked it up again last week and couldn't put it down. Still found it disturbing.
For anyone who has read this: "Well? What dy'a think? Possible?" bobser

Weird. I just picked up this book yesterday at my local bookstore; thinking the same thing. I haven't read it but I like to hear what people think about it.

Is it about hypnosis?

I am not a big fan of Koontz but absolutely love this book.
It gave me tons of inspiration and I often send people down into 'The Chapel' or 'The Crypt'. I have also experimented with activiating subjects with Haiku. Works as well as any other reinduction. Definitely a page turner. Anthony

But I'm sure all you do after you get them 'down there' is have them laugh outrageously, like a lady? I read Paul Voodini state that the one time he did act as a medium (kinda' pushed into it) he felt this guilty excitement (paraphrasing) afterwards. There is also a (arguably) power in the actual hypnosis process. I do feel that there is a step where a (good) hypnotists should be aware of. But of course never truly can he be sure exactly where this step is. Or maybe so sure of himself and his skilss (not to mention his ethics) that he intentionally does not look for or even believe in this step. Of course if 'False Memory' (the novel) was absolute then that step would indeed exist. And... well... there y'go... nuff said... wink... nod... "I'm listening".

First time I did it was when we filmed I Know What You Did Last Friday. I nneeded the guy to have amnesia for a month of his life and also not know we had flown him and his family to Amsterdam for filming
As much as on another day I would argue that one simple suggestion would do it, by then we had established 'The Crypt'. I had him bury all memories in a secret safe in the crypt. 'Close your eyes and see those steps, now go down those steps into The Crypt etc' Establishing a 'private place of hypnosis' is now something I do often. Anthony

So.... there can be many crypts, cellars, safes, cartons.... places. Places within places. Dependent on the programme. A place to store memories hat can be accessed again through haiku or anything. But the reason for haiku is to make it almost impossible for anyone else to find those places or how to access the person or programme. All potentially nasty, potentially evil. Yet... never boring. I wanna' be a nice Dr. Ahriman. Or maybe just not an evil Dr. Ahriman. Would that make it ok? I guess that would be up to me, no?

I love the way Anthony quite often makes a statement, quickly, curtly almost, then leaves the room, leaving the reader to wonder whether he is demented or knows certain truths. Me? I think he knows certain truths. I've seen carrier pidgeons in flight. They look zoned out. All of 'em.
With regard to Estebrooks, that's that step I was talking about.

Yes, the work of Estabrooks slaughters: social compliance, mere suggestion, authority, peer pressure etc (if true of course).
Anthony, we need a volunteer immediately, who likes to travel. How DID Estabrooks find his volunteers? Were they tricked? I suspect they were. Anyway we must NOT talk of this any further in a public space/place. If agreed ring me once. I will return call and bring chlrfrm.

Didn't Derren Brown allegedly hypnotise a man and fly him out to Marrakesh, Morocco to wake up in a photo booth? With no memory of how he got there?

Allegedly. And your description is exactly how it looked. I think it was the first Trick or Treat and an enjoyable episode with a great ending of the guy wondering through the Marrakesh Market looking lost.
