I need help for a suggestion for a trick to do to illustrate the John 2 text of Jesus' changing water into wine. NOT THINK INK! Any help would be appreciated!

How about a few clear tumblers with a drop of red food coloring left to dry overnight and a lota bowl.

A different lota bowl idea - fill the bowl with a light red water, cover the ** with wax. empty out the red water that's visible, then fill with clear water. for performance you can empty the bowl of clear water into a glass, remove the wax with your thumb, then repeatedly pour out the "wine."

I may be out of line here as I do not consider myself as a Christian but......
Isn't it untoward to recreate one of Jesus' miracles using a mere magic trick. I think I understand the concept of Gospel Magic as a way of spreading the Good News, as it were, using prestidigitive conceits. But recreating a miracle? I dunno.
I am the fakir, you....

I personally have tended to shy away from doing effects that seem to replicate miracles of Jesus...but I've seen things like water to wine performed in a way that isn't "crossing the line."
I think that is what was so wonderful about Wes Holly's idea...the effect isn't turning water into wine...it is just that the container that held water...now holds "wine." Great concept.

Thanks, Wes, for the suggestion of the *** with the Lota Bowl. Unfortunately, the water in my Lota Bowl(and in others?)leaks out into the middle section, so the clear water becomes colored. It was a good idea, though. Guess I'll go with Rev. Bill's idea of the food coloring in the bottom of a few glasses. Thanks, everyone, for your good ideas! And a few glasses will make the point -- I don't have to replicate the 180 gallons or so of water/wine in the text!

To use red food colouring on its own is completely unlike wine. Use a fair bit of red and a single drop of blue food colouring. Looks much better.
By the way, I agree with the others here about being careful not to try and "replicate" a miracle. Kind of takes away from the fact that it was actually a real miracle. Just something to keep that in mind when thinking of how you will present this.

I use the classic effect "Water in Newspaper" to illustrate this text.
http://madhattermagicshop.com/magicshop/......_id=7529 Load the paper with food coloring before the show and you're ready to go. If you can get a copy of "Jerusalem Post" an idea will be to tell the story as it was written in the newspaper. |

More thanks: Thomas, the suggestion of a drop of blue food coloring with the red is a great idea! Also, thanks, Thomas, for the reminder of the "Water in Newspaper" effect. Wow, I bought that when I was a teenage -- haven't thought about it for a long, long time! And I love the idea of using the "Jerusalem Post," although I'd have to search for a copy here in northwest Arkansas! Maybe I'll contact an area rabbi and see if he/she can put me onto a copy!

Whoops! the "thank you" for the blue food coloring idea should go to MagicMatthews! Sorry about that!

You're welcome! The suggestion of a drop of blue food coloring is also new to me. So thanks, MagicMatthews.

You're welcome. The drop of blue I found by experimentation when trying to make fake wine for teaching distillation in science (I also add ethanol and this is what we extract). I don't tell them that it's not real, but I don't try to convince them that it is real either, they just do this themselves. I've even had chemistry students saying that they can smell the fruity or grape smell. Of course, I remind them that we never taste anything in the laboratory.
Actually, this is a good reminder for our psychology in magic and misdirection too. Far better for people to make their own conclusions from your subtleties than you trying to convince them. This magic is far more powerful. However, again be careful on this if presenting miracles of Jesus. You don't want it to look like you can replicate a miracle, and you certainly don't want to reduce what Jesus did down to a magic trick!

A neato "multiplying water" trick is the Karl Germaine water jars. These are larger steel taller cups that are originally stacked "empty" together- but then out of them gets poured much water as they are unstacked. Pretty cool. We filmed this routine way back in July, 2009, should hopefully be on the latest installment of Now That's Magic! which I am hoping will be done by February, 2010? (our film editor has been ill). It will be posted to both http://www.ChristianMagician.org and to MagicBob's "videos" portion on his website: http://www.MagicBob.org when it gets done.
