Cardboy,
These are effects that you are comfortable with, so they should be good for your performances. Some things to consider, however, might be; Pocket space: I usually try to travel light. I don't want my pockets to be too full, or lumpy. Also, I always find that I don't use everything I bring. I don't think I've ever used more than seven effects in an entire evening of table hopping, and even that is a lot. Unless it is an effect or item that I will get a great deal of use out of, I don't usually bring it. The exception for me, is the special item for repeat customers. I will leave that item in the office, though, until the customer arrives. Performance space: I don't necessarily by into the idea that you should never use the customers' table for a performance, however it is rare that I would ever take enough space to perform a matrix type routine. Reset: You want items that automatically or easily reset. I assume this needs no explanation. These are just a couple of guidelines that I use for my weekly gig. Hopefully, some other more experienced guys will offer some words to you, as well. Congrats on being hired, good luck, and most of all, have fun. Eric Grossman

hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Just to let you know I created these routines based mainly on size of the audience. I would use the first routine for example for a small 1-3 person group. The second one is for a group larger then 4 people.
However you have raised interesting points, I guess i should just bring some tricks for a night and "wing" a routine with them. |

No I would not wing them! I would work them out. The routines need to be somewhat fast and could be stopped at any point. You talked about the rings. I think this is way too long for a restaurant. I spend 3-6 mins at the table this is filled with interaction, 1 or 2 routines then balloons. If they have their food I will just make the kids balloons.
Here are some ideas, but remember do what fits you and what you are comfortable doing. Opener: I am different than most I don't walk up a flash open with a trick. I walk up and talk, ask them how they are so on and so forth. Then I say I am the official Magician for <name> and I would like to show them something. With this opening I very rarely get turned down. Why? Because they feel good about me because I talked to them first. I gave them a chance to "feel" me out. Effects: I use rubber bands CMH Coins: Coins thru table, bent penny, lethal tender, non gimmick S&S, Hopping half’s, coin flurry to jumbo coin Cards: ambitious card, cards across, Birthday trick, has a child cut to the aces then does twisting aces, Invis deck Sponge balls: Scott G's PB&J (any routine really) Chop cup routine with a small cup that fits in my pocket Other ideas: China Prayer vase, Silk and TT, bending spoons, Ring and string, Dlites, hot-rod. Of course the best advice you'll get and experience wise is to do it. After your first night (if you have a busy place) you'll see how you need to move. Here is how important it is. A local guy was let go because he did not get to all the tables. Some people get very upset if the kids want to see you and you don't come. This is very bad for you for the restaurant to hear these kinds of complaints. Bottom line don't worry about knocking their socks off with extreme killer magic. The above effects are very good for the lay people and will amaze them. Focus on being entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Quote:
Just so you know I work 3 nights a week doing restaurant magic. I could never do all the routines you have in your sets at one table. I will say this good job on fore thinking, I did the same thing when I started and I think it needs to be done. When I starter "Doing it" it all changed to the "Real World" I find I rarely can get 3 routines in at a table. Also don't worry about having them flow from one to another in this setting. It is ok to do a coin then a card routine. It is nice to have them flow, or I should say build off each other, but again there is not much time. Look at it another way. You only have 3-6 mins with these people. MAKE EVERY WORD AND EVERY SECOND COUNT! Chances are they won't remember but a small part of what you did and said, so make it count. Kind of like advertising space you only have so many word to make your point. Do you want them to remember you because of the amazing trick you did or how fun you were? For me I want BOTH and I only have 3-6 mins. I want them to escape the stresses of life for just a moment and have fun. Some people don't care for magic but they like the little jokes I tell or the Balloons. With this I have a better chance to win over the whole table not just one or two people who are interested.

Just a couple of points....I would stray away from anything that involves dealing cards on the table as in 'Out of this World'and the gambling 4-ace routine might be a bit heavy (though I'm not entirely sure to which you are referring).
Keep your routines direct and easy-to-follow and make sure that the closer is the strongest effect in the set. Remember that you will undoubtably be interrupted by a waiter or waitress trying to serve entrees so you may have to stop your performance short. The number of effects both in total and per set seems on target for an evenings work (surely everyone has a different take I'm sure), and you have variety. With that said, go kick --tt! - Jared |

Thanks for the information guys.
My ace routine is basicly a production one by one and then into a multiple shift bringing all of them onto the top then just dealing them out. |

I have to agree that real world experience will blow any preperation you have done out of the water.
Rehearse your routines and get them slick but still feel free to play and shorten or lengthen the time you speend at a table. The hardest part will be realising that your favourite routine, whilst strong magic, just isn't going to fly at a restuarant. BTW, is Outback an Australian themed restaurant? I find that very amusing since we don't have Australian cusine in Australia! |

Yea the outback is australian themed, when i was a kid i once couldn't tell which bathroom was which cause it read "blokes" and "shelias".
