I am part of the guest services team in my restaurants. I earn a three digit paycheck plus tips for two hours of service. They earn less than minimum wage and tips for a 6 - 10 hour shift. In my view, I would be rude to accept money from a fellow team member for doing a simple kindness. A warm working relationship is more important than an extra $5 bill in my pocket. In my mind, there's a difference between guests and fellow team members.

Skip I think the misconception you are operating under is that tips are a 0 sum game. If you get a tip, it comes out of the servers tip. This is not how it works.
As I have said without fail every restaurant I have worked the servers like the fact that the guest has a better experience and tips them larger OVERALL than when I am not there. This is THEIR perception not mine. I have never had a server offer ME a tip, so I am not so sure how that goes or not. The server is going to get a tip regardless of what happens also based on the experience the guest has. Largely this is in their own hands, but environment, kitchen and lots of other factors play into it. Also, I know servers at the places I worked at/owned making better than $500 a night in tips AS THE NORM. So the whole "minimum wage" thingie absolutely did not apply. This happens quite freequently in better restaurants. I have no idea how a family balloon night server would feel, but I still think that your tip is not the same money as their tip.

We're in complete agreement, Danny. My servers tell me that tips are generally better when I'm there specifically for the reasons you mentioned. I've never felt that my tips diminished the servers tips.
As a former cop, you understand the "code" of the professional courtesy. Cops don't generally write fellow cops traffic tickets for minor infractions, for example. In that same vein, I simply believe that the servers and I are on the same team with a common goal of giving the diner the best experience possible. I consider it a professional courtesy to provide a simple service to a fellow team member without expecting or accepting compensation.

From my experience, as has been already stated, the servers who have the entertainment at their tables stand to get a better gratuity from the customer as they have enjoyed themselves and their experience at the dining establishment. This comes from the servers telling me they typically get better tips from the tables I have worked. As for accepting tips, when I started I would simply thank them for their kindness and advise them to pass it along to the server. When the look of rejection was obvious on the face of one patron it made me realize it was not for the server it was their appreciation for the fun/enjoyment I brought them while I was with them. People don't typically tip the entertainment out of a sense of obligation, they tip out of, as mentioned, gratitude for your time entertaining them. So I guess what I am saying is, customers will tip the entertainment, servers, etc based on their appreciation for YOUR service. So in conclusion..
Servers offering good service get tipped accordingly, entertained guests typically tip the server more becasue they have enjoyed their visit more. Simplified yes..true..you bet. Happy New Year to all! Oh, one last thing..axs MArk said ( Ithink it was MArk) why would a person tip a server with a trick or balloon? Tell them to go to the electric company or their mortgage broker and try to pay the bill with a trick or balloon. I agree that is simply WRONG. Enjoy the service, show it with your gracious tip. |
