Don, this sounds like an odd spot for a worm pitch, but I'm sure it's a good one if you got it.
Can you explain why this would be a good location? We have tons of conventions near where I live (realtors, teachers, builders, etc.), but I never considered doing a Magic Worm or Svengali pitch at such shows, figuring they were too business-oriented. SETH

Boat and car shows are open to the plubic.Thats the key word right there "plubic" Never try to book a "trade" show to pitch.I believe trade shows is what you are talking about Seth.I dout trade shows would let a pitchman in anyway. All car and boat shows are is a way to sell cars and boats "to the plubic".All these shows have vendor spots.Look at the L.A. car show that was last month. They even have a "Kid Zone"
http://www.laautoshow.com/ you know pitching the squirmle at a show with a "kid zone" has to be good.Lot of kids go to these events. I saw this car show months ago but I really am semi retired and didn't want to go that far or work that hard. But 20 years ago I wouldn't have had to think twice about a car show like this one.I would have got a flight to L.A. got a hotel room paid rent, these events are about $2,000.00 these days and still have to hired a brinks truck to bring all my money back home...they are that good. Hope this answered your questions. Later Don |

Thanks, Don, I get it now!!
You're right, there is a distinction between trade shows and public shows, and I can see where the latter might work out very well if there is lots of traffic. Of course, I can imagine that the table fee would be quite a bit higher than your average street fair, but it might be well worth it. SETH

Car shows make you more money than boat shows or RV shows but boat and RV shows aren't as much space rent.I believe Alex told me that the boat show space rent was $1,000 plus all the "dings' electric, insurance etc.for 4 days.I'll let you know how he does.
Carl has the NYC car show, rent is $1,700 plus dings, but he leaves there with close to $40,000.00.You easy make your nut for these high priced shows and lots of profit.Don't be afraid to book them. Also 99% of the time you are the only vendor with things for kids to buy. Later,Don |

Whew, sounds like Alex is definitely in the big leagues now!! Actually, it boils down to about $500 a day plus the dings, which is not too bad.
But I just can't imagine working solo for four days straight. I did a two-day show last Fall and that was plenty for me!! Is Alex doing this by himself, or with a partner? SETH

I have been doing Gun Shows, only 100 for the weekend. I rarely will pay more then $200 per day for a spot. I have never done a boat or RV show but did a home show, but got the spot on trade which made it worth it.
Also worked a jewelry trade show open to the public that did well. Will be working another one of those in Chicago next month. I'll be hitting the fairs April - October. Like those the best, especially the two week plus ones! Someone told me about an event book that has all the major US events in it. Does anyone know where I can get this book or if there is something online? Thanks! |

Alex just called me and said that the boat show called him and said that the squirmle wasn't "boat related" so they didn't want him. This is the FIRST time I ever heard any thing like this.I used to work a boat show in Memphis Tn. for years and they gave me a discount on the rent just to keep me because they liked that I had something for kids. What is this world coming to ?

Every boat show I've ever been to had all kinds of items being sold.
Kitchen gadgets, wire strippers, cookware, etc. The organizers of this particular show must be new to the biz. This might be a show to skip anyway. |

I agree , this is a real bummer all around. It would be a good show to skip.

I don't know of an events book, but try eventcrazy.com, its an online events source. I am sure you will like it. ROD |

I can't believe that they wouldn't give him a spot, unless they were sold out or had someone selling the same product. It is crazy.
Rod, thanks for the link, I found a show I can do Superbowl weekend. If anyone else knows about any other event guides, please let me know, either printed or online. |

Very strange, as everyone is saying. I have done virtually ALL kinds of shows, including boat shows, and except for one trade show in VA, have never been asked to leave because of what I'm selling.
The one in Virginia Beach did not allow sales at the show. Didn't find that out until I had paid them, driven several hundred miles AND set up. Oh well, did a flea marked and did OK but not as well as I expected at the trade show. Of course, from then on, I ask about over-the-table sales AND tell 'em what I'm selling. And since I've done most shows several times by now (after 18 years) I don't have those problems any more. Since I do both the strippers AND the cards, I have an advantage that I can demo to both adults AND kids. In fact, these days, I'm doing just about the same dollar amount in each, even tho the strippers sell for 4 times as much as the cards. I even sell many decks to people who buy strippers. After all, my Magic Card box is on the table in plain sight. "What's with the Magic Cards?" "Well, it's a trick deck and...." and I dive into my second demo. I ordered 2 gross of decks from Loftus that were delivered just after Christmas and have only 3 boxes left. As you can imagine, I REALLY love to demo the cards! Thanx, again, Don! Jon |

Hey Jon, leave some stock for the rest of us!
Seriously, glad to hear that you are moving those decks. When the weather warms up about 50 more degrees, I'll be out there, too. I just put down deposits on some good street festivals in April and May, and am practicing my DL to get ready!! SETH

Quote: Hey! What are you? Some kinda wimp? You got something against a little frostbite? Actually, even in warm San Antonio, I only do shows inside this time of year. But I've found biz is MUCH better, suddenly, this year than last. Dunno why. I'm not working any harder. Maybe I'm finally learning the DL! ;-)

Actually, it's much easier to do my DL's when the temp is below 32 degrees -- the cards stick together all by themselves! SETH
