Hey I was just seeing if you guys could help me out a little. I did restaurant magic back in 2006 and then took a break from magic all together. I started back not too long ago and am starting 2 restaurant jobs shortly. I want to do shows (corporate events, parties). I'm in Georgia and magic is not the most popular thing in my area. I'm trying to get more active in magic and have people to bounce ideas off of. Besides this forum where could I become more active in the magic community? Would I benefit from the IBM? Also, how could I get started booking shows (besides advertising with my restaurant.) This forum has been very informative so far.

You need to evaluate the local ring and see if it is worthwhile. We just had a long conversation about this over at magictalk.com - all about the value of local clubs.
See what the local IBM and SAM clubs offer - but make sure to attend a few meetings as a guest to make sure it isn't a "good ole boy backpatting club" where socialization is more important than magic. This forum, magictalk.com, and genii forum are three good places for online fraternity. Regarding booking shows - marketing marketing marketing. Word of mouth etc... Join a local magic club if you have one. The IBM and SAM won't be much help in getting gigs. Put the word out that you're available, and volunteer to perform at relatives and friends parties. It takes awhile for things to start happening.

Early times I have a similar situation as you: I live in a place very far from the modern magicians in Puerto Rico. We are not too much good magicians in this tiny island, so I search all I can do in the internet, buy all the books that I could and literally eat all the information that I can.
In spanish this is a called Autodidacta, I learn alone with books and information. When you have the basics, move to the nearest IBM or SAM group that you have and start to attend conventions and lectures...share with other magicians. Is very important start to learn by yourself to be respected and treated as one more magician in this clubs, if you come to an assembly or a ring as an complete strange and not knowing too much about magic it could be a very hard time, and difficult. If you don't have any magicians around you...use this powerful tool that we called internet and learn all you can by yourself. I Hope this helps, Hansel!
