I didn't know where to post this. I remember seeing an effect where the performer had about 13 pennies on a mat and no matter how the spectators chose to move something everyhing added up to 13 or something. I'm sorry for the vague description, but I really don't remember the entire effect. Does this sound familiar to ANYONE? I would love to learn it, but I have no clue what it is called, or exactly what the effect is. Sorry and thank you!

Setting a big layout of coins (or matchsticks) immediately starts to sound like Nim to me.
There are dozens of variations of Nim, the point of which is to take items away from the layout........which isn't mentioned in your description. You might start with Nim though, some of the best descriptions of which are in an old Nick Trost publication called "Gambling Tricks". If you don't have the Trost book, and want a more general (not so focused on a gambling presentation) take on Nim: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nim |

I bet he's not talking about Nim. Instead, I think he's talking about an old "redistribution" effect that's at least 400 years old, and probably older.
A nice version and explanation can be found in Michael Weber's Lifesavers under the title "To Feed Many." Jason

I think there is a version in Martin Gardner's Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic. Giovanni does a version of this as well. The effect is such that, even though you keep removing pennies, each spectator counts the same amount remaining.

My money is on To Feed Many as well. But that uses a lot more than 13 coins doesn't it?
I've some nice subtleties on Nim as a scam if anyone would like them. PM for more. |

I've started to play with Nim as a scam and I LOVE it. I was doing it for my 4th grade class during indoor recess this week. They were becoming so frustrated because they couldn't beat me.
The effect I was looking for could be To Feed Many. Basically no matter when a spectator adds a penny or takes one away sides always add up to 13 or something like that. Does this sound familiar? |

In Jim Steinmeyer's Impuzzibilities, he does a variation of this effect in which the layout is triangular, and the objects are supposed to be planes flying into the Bermuda Triangle. I like the plot that this presentation adds to the effect, but I'm still skeptical that this can really fool a thinking person.

I have a version in my lecture notes about "skimming money" out of a casino. This was also published in a French magazine.
The first time I saw this done, Jim Ryan was performing it for Dai Vernon at one of the St. Louis Jubilees. It is very puzzling to many people, but not all. Straight line thinkers can sometimes see right through it. |

Funny. I was just going to mention Gary's version, but see he beat me to it.
It's a very good presentation. A few years ago, I was in the hospital having surgery and I used it to really frustrate a few of the nurses. |
