Years ago I saw Siegfried and Roy do an effect where someone went up some stairs to a platform where a hangman's noose was hanging from a support. The person was placed in a bag and the noose placed around his neck. The trap door was opened and the bag fell empty to the floor.
Does anyone know what this illusion is really called? Is there a video of the performance somewhere? Any workshop plans out there for sale? I would like to perform this at our next N.U.M.A. "Escape from Reality" show in August. Thanks for any help! Bruce |

Lance Burton performs it at the beggining of one of his tv specials. Look for it on youtube, I am sorry I don't remember the name of the special.
I think it was built by Bill Smith at magicventures. Best regards |

The illusion is sometimes referred to as "Cheating the Gallows" or just "The Gallows" or even the "Hangman Illusion", it is a REALLY old illusion. Paul Osborne has the plans, and the Thayer plans can still be found. Basics have not changed at all. Mine was built by John Gaughan, and looks, (and is!) quite heavy. 5 large crates.

Gary Ouellet brought out a version that Brett Daniels used in his first shows. It was presented as a Russian Roulette game with the audience.

Paul's plans call the illusion "The Executioner's Dream," which mentioned before are very close to the Thayer Plans. In one of the old Magic Magazine's there is a photo of Carter performing a Thayer built Hangman's Illusion. The illusion was so big and difficult to troupe with that Carter purposely left it at one of the theatres while touring. Probably ended up in the landfill, but wouldn't you love to find one of those lying around?
Oh, and the masked magician exposed the general workings of the illusion, except a guillotine was used in place of the gallows. |

I had bought Lance Burton old one which was built by John Gaughan for Mark Wilson originally. Lance's new one was built by Bill Smith. I sold mine to a illusionist in Ohio about 6 months ago after having it for over 10 years. I do have pictures and perfomance tape and if you PM me we can chat more.

Owens build ours for the original Dick Foster production of Spellbound in Philadelphia. It was a dual 'hanging' of Jonathan Pendragon and Carlton. I believe there were some videos shot at the time (circa 1984)of the finale where the prop was used.
Do not go where the path may lead, but go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

I forgot to mention that if I am remembering this correctly, after he fell and vanished, he reappeared from somewhere else. Hope this helps in my description.

Thank you for your help. I have found some plans online and I'll check into it. It looks like it is quite involved, perhaps more than I have the ability to do right now.
Thanks again. Bruce |
