Hi,
I what to give a telekinetic timber a burnt look. As if it was a piece of wood that belonged to a burned building. How should I do it? With a blow torch? Thanks in advance

I held mine over a natural gas flame (i.e. the gas stove in my kitchen) to singe it.
However it didn't blacken well. So to do that I used an ordinary cheap candle, and sooted it up. Then to keep the soot in place I used dull matte laquer - or you may know it as 'roughing spray' and pay more for it from a magic delaer than in the DIY shop!

Thanks! I'll try with the candle flame and the matte laquer!

I used a propane torch to singe mine. One does need to be careful not to let the timber burn too much, though. I like docsteve's idea of using matte laquer to seal the timber. Although authentic looking, I hated getting the ash/soot all over my hands.

The matte laquer is a good way to go!

I also used a candle and just singed the edges, to good effect.

Interesting...the timber is from a wood from which the cupboard is made... in which a child crouched in a burning building.... waiting for help......

KOTAH has a routine for the TT about pit-props & mineshafts - very evocative. I used that as inspiration to script a routine based around a real-life mining disaster nearby. My routine was included in "Seven Shades".

You should take care in subjecting the telekinetic timber to a flame. Singe it slightly and briefly, then let it cool off. The mechanism and the fact that the block has been split and re-glued could cause a problem. It should not be allowed to get hot internally.

Also - be careful when burning it, if it chars off too much wood, the balance point gets shifted and may even become too unreliable.
Use something with high heat for quick burning - a slow flame will let too much heat penetrate deeper and may damage the gimmick. In addition to soot and charring, rub some dirt on it... maybe check out the craft store for some aging materials... You could also do some creative work with a wood burning gun.
