I have a friend that wants to check a portable sound system when he flies. I told him he should just take his wireless mic and ipod and make arangments for sound at the venue. Anyone taking their sound system when they fly? Is there a system out there that is designed for this? I did tell him he could probably carry on a Fender P80.

I only fly my wireless microphone, ipod and icue2, all in an ATA case. I would never fly a portable system. I guarantee it will be damaged and the airlines will not cover damage on something considered fragile.
It would be much more cost effective to rent a good system locally. If they can afford to fly you and equipment, they will either have a good system or can afford to rent one. Lou |

Ahhh - really mixed feeling here. I have arrived at venues with a sound system so poor that peforming in the next county behind a boulder would have been preferable -- and I can project pretty well. And the speakers were so bad the music sounded like Muzak in an elevator that had been attacked by people who slashed apart speakers for fun.
So - carrying a small sound system that can fill a room is good -- if you can assure it will get there. Lately airlines have not been as dependable as Fed Express or UPS. Yes it is an extra expense (charge that to the customer) but it can save your bippy. Even though the P Series is rugged (I prefer the PD series sound) it is wise to have a great ATA case for it, the mike, show tech, cables and player. Do ot skimp on the money for this unless you have a really great insurance plan for damage in transportation -- or very deep pockets. It is always better to be pleasantly surprised by a system in place when you get somewhere if you do not have to use your system -- AND you have the cables to interface into it with your sound set. If it will not work - your back up can make a difference. As you grow -- your contract for tech riders can spell out needs -- make sure one goes to the hiring organization AND one to the facilities manager. Another solution if this is an occassional ting and the location has enough commerce -- call ahead to the local music store and get their take on the stuff the venue has -- and arrange to rent what you will need to make it right if appropriate. A lot of non-magical work -- but it makes us look professional in the long-run. It is either that -- or dive everywhere as Christian and Katalina do ---- assuring their sound system is with them, just in case.

If your audience isn't too large, the new Fender Passport Executive is looking pretty good to carry on. http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0694000000
