This is a great book, and for those of us who like "Overture" it is funny to read Max's comments on that one - that Stephen Minch felt there were better routines in Max's repertoire to replace it. I am thinking however that this was a little bit of wonderful chicanery to throw off the merely curious or casual reader. "Overture" is a beauty. Is it earth-shattering? No, but, it is magical, well routined and leads into so many other possibilities.

I am a big fan of the Ecological routine, I can't quite remember the name, but it is a twisting effect with the four aces turning faceup in the middle of the deck trapping the selected card!

Recently picked this up after reading so much about here on the Café' and some PM's with a Café' member who told me it is a "must have". He is right!
Quite a treaure trove of material. The very first trick is really clever and I was practicing it within minutes of opening the book! |

I'll have to disagree...
it's a great book with HEAPS of material in it, but I'd say it's filled with tricks that other magicians will appreciate (variations, clever methods, unique twists/handling of existing effects). but I don't see many of the effects 'great' enough to be performed to lay ppl for the wow effect. not something david blaine would do on television |

Gotta disagree with you, Kadz. Besides, why should David Blaine be the barometer for what kinds of tricks play well in the real world? He has a certain style. But my style is different. And I can tell you that "A Fine Mesh" plays GREAT in the real world. As well as a few other effects whose names escape me at the moment. Some of the effects are "magician only" type effects but there are many which are very good and commercial. Love this book.

As for the book being filled with variations, you are incorrect. Yes there are some, but this book is a pivotal work and is indeed the birthplace of more than one popular plot that countless others have varied. (Of course most if not all of these were previously published elsewhere by Max) Rod |

David Blaine is a very poor barometer for magic effects. Only thing I see Blaine is good for anymore is being put in a block of ice or fishbowl.
He should have stuck with his street magic and he would be getting more respect today! Rennie P.S. Focus is a FANTASTIC book containing FANTASTIC magic!!!
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

My favorite in Focus is Ascension. It certainly takes some work, but intermediate card magicians will not find it difficult.
The finale will floor audiences. Most magi will think you had to use gaffs but a borrowed deck can be used as long as it is good enough shape to do some sleights. For a magical group, go ahead and use your own deck to allow them to think about gaffs. They will be bewildered when you let them see the deck. |

Couldn’t the book anywhere - but was lucky enough to borrow it from a friend.
So far “Overture” and “Picasso aces” has delighted me. Can easily see those two effects as some I will use for both lay audience and magicians. Overture as an intro to Twisting the Acess or Doc Daleys Last trick, and Picasso Aces is just great on its own. Next I will look at is Ascension and Masque. Can’t wait so I get started on that right now Jan |
