I came up with this while practicing some half passes and somehow automatically without thinking did it during my practice sessions.
I have been doing this quite sometime but realised just know that it looks quite ok as a pass (I just did it while practicing but had no use for it in my card magic). So I would like to know if this is Steve Draun's midnight shift? If not, could you outline what pass it might be? Would you be also so kind to add some sources and or history of the pass? I realise that the sleight performed well, but that is obvious since I just played around with without even knowing that I was doing a sleight. This is the video: http://vimeo.com/9492148 PASSWORD: midnight |

Hm right did not think about that. But I guess if you know the Midnight shift you would recognise it.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like the midnight shift. Here's what mine looks like, for comparison:

Dear Luigi,
it was actually your in addition to Jack Carpenters video that made me think that the "stuff" I am doing looks similar to the midnight shift. I however do use a deep grip like the one used for the Fisher's gravity pass. Nice performance by the way. One question comes to my mind. Isn't it somehow akward to spin the deck 360 degrees, and wouldn't it be more natural looking to just raise the deck to your face, squaring it up and looking at it. But probably the 360 allows the midnight shift to be invisible. Unfortunately I do not own any reference to look up this nice sleight. |

Dear MagicTobe,
You might want to check out some of Michael Vincent's stuff (he has a few videos posted on youtube, and I can't recommend his DVD set enough!), as he uses the midnight shift quite a lot. On the awkwardness of the spin, I went back and forth on that. I tend to think that it is only awkward if you make it awkward. We do a lot of stuff with a deck of cards that are unusual from a layman's point of view. Think of a fan, for example! No layman fans cards like that, and it could very well be a suspicious move, right? Who knows what manner of trickery it is possible to accomplish under the guise of fanning a deck of cards? (And actually, that is true: the cherry control, for example) But usually it is done so casually that it eliminates suspicion from the spectators' mind. That being said, I do try to incorporate that action into a larger action that makes sense in the context of the effect. For example, if I use it to control a card to the top, I might incorporate it into a larger action of bringing the deck up to my eyes and trying to gauge about where the card went into the deck, and then ask the spectators something like: "Now, how many cards from the top would you say that was?" This not only justifies the action, but also forces the spectator to implicitly agree that the card is in the middle of the deck, but I digress... |

Very clever magical thinking. Perhaps I will look deeper into the midnight shift and I could check out Michael Vincent's work, it has been reccomended by many.
Thank you for your contribution. |

Steve Draun's shift is printed in Richards Collected Almanac. If you don't own this already, you'll love it I'm sure.
