Hi Gang,
I just got the new _Mathematics Magazine_ from the MAA today. In it, there's a neat article on the famous Gergonne effect. The author offers a new explanation in terms of the Radix Sort from computer science. The bibliographic details are: Ethan D. Bolker, "Gergonne's Card Trick, Positional Notation and Radix Sort," _Mathematics Magazine_, Volume 83, Number 1, February 2010, pp. 46-49. Be sure to check the Martin Gardner source cited there for an excellent handling tip from Dai Vernon. It strikes me that this would look a lot more interesting if the performer used symbol cards, word cards, pictures of celebrities or anything that wasn't playing cards! Anyway, it's a nice explanation in terms of a common computer algorithm. Thomas Henry |
