By Choice and By Chance (Paul Richards)
The Effect: Give a spectator a pocket dictionary containing thousands of words. Also hand them a pair of dice. The directions are simple. A word will be chosen by choice and by chance! The chance consists of rolling the dice to get any random numbers. The choice comes into play in that the spectator can use the numbers in several ways. For example, if they rolled a 5 and a 4, they could add those numbers and turn to page 9. They could put them together one way and turn to page 45; or put them together the other way and turn to page 54. Or they could roll them again and start over. Whatever they choose, they open the book to the selected page and remember the first word on the page. You concentrate and write down your prediction. The spectator names their word and, your prediction is 100% correct!!! *Can someone give me their review of this trick, it sound intresting and I might buy it* |

The good news: The dictionary is ungimmicked. The dice are ungimmicked. With a little preparation on your part, you could use any book. BUT that doesn't mean you can have a selection of books by a spectator (unless you use equivoque). The mechanics of doing this effect are trivial.
The (possibly) bad news: The secret behind the effect is very simple. If that's going to disappoint you, stay away. On the other hand, if you don't mind paying money for a simple idea that you can use, go for it. There are those who feel that using dice - or cards, or whatever - to select a page is artificial and lessens a book test. You'll have to decide that for yourself. But if you're considering this effect, it sounds like you already have. |

DO you have to use the dice?

As I said (Yikes! Over two years ago!), the dice are ungimmicked, so you can use any pair of dice. But the method does depend on dice.

I have used it for both close up strolling (where the pocket sized dictionary comes in handy and to save pocket space use invisible dice) and have also used it for standup. For stand up shows, I routined it around a trip to las vegas. I used jumbo sized dice from a party supply store, and instead of the dictionary I used a las vegas travel guide book. "tonight we're going to take an imaginary trip to las vegas" you get the idea. It plays very well that way and can be a nice 5 minute routine easily using minimal props. Great effect. You can also make it appear more random by using a few different vegas books, travel guides magazines etc like 3 to choose from, then have one selected and go from there.

I have this and it really good.
I like the fact that it uses a real dictionary instead of a book that screams "gimmick". I prefer the alternate handling detailed in the instructions. I also like shomemagic's idea of using invisible dice. http://www.elmwoodmagic.com/?nd=full&key=159 |

I have used the effect as well as the method for many, many shows. Its clever and oh-so-easy to perform to allow you to focus on the presentation. If your on the fence about buying it, I say get it and try it on a few folks and see what kind of reactions are possible.

...As somebody else mentioned, the method is very simple. And for the best part of £18, it's simply no worth it. I mean, the highest you could roll is a double-six (go to page 12 or 66)...
I could go out now and make one up for a couple of quid. Dr Zordas |

As the "somebody" who mentioned the method is very simple, I'll point out I also said, "If that's going to disappoint you, stay away. On the other hand, if you don't mind paying money for a simple idea that you can use, go for it."
There is absolutely nothing gimmicked here, so you're not buying the props, you're buying the method. And while the method is simple, if you wouldn't think of it yourself, it doesn't matter how simple the method seems once it's revealed to you. :carrot: |

For whatever reason, specs never consider that the highest they could roll is 66.
Keep in mind that the methods behind some of the most devastating effects are simple. |

I take it the spectator tells you the page number...... wouldn't it be good if you knew the page and took it from there....mmmmm

You shouldn't blame the effect just because you don't believe you can perform it successfully. I used to perform this quite often and I never had anyone question how many choices they have. ...And yes, they were so easily fooled. |

I had this effect demonstrated a few times to me before. It is really simple in its presentation but I found it to be a good effect (from spectator's point of view).
