OK, I'm back from breakfast with the old retired gents.
I heard back from the maker of the tiny brass cup set (James Riser). Here is a summary of what he wrote me: Apparently the first half of February there is a big international gem and mineral show in Tucson. One of Riser's old friends is a dealer in pearls. So Riser made his set of Riser Micro Traditional Cups for performing for his friend. The balls he planned to use with these little gems are some of his friend's pearls. Practice was done using BB's and a mouse pad. Riser put up a couple pictures for me showing the cups with the pearls. See: http://jamesriser.com/Magic/MicroTraditi......0899.jpg and http://jamesriser.com/Magic/MicroTraditi......0900.jpg He told me that he uses traditional ball penetration moves, shell game moves, and a new "squirt" method for loading the little cups. The small scale and smooth ball surfaces seem to open up some different techniques. So, Fortasse, these cups were "purpose-built". As one of his customers, he also told me about a new method of doing the chop cup effect that he has developed and will be marketing on a limited basis. It does not use a chop cup! This sounds interesting. He indicated that this would appear on his web site one of these days. MR

Joe Porper has a magnetless cup that works like a chop cup and even "picks up" a ball... he's thinking of marketing it.

Funsway :
The cups you're talking about on Ebay are not "purpose-built". They're actually the metal eqivalent of shot glasses, as indeed the listing pretty much concedes. Fortasse |

Fortasse, they also look a heck of a lot like the cups that Lee found in the antique store that he posted about here:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......m=115&13 The leather case looks newer in the auction listing and someone has already bid on these too... I wonder who? They are very cute. |

I have bookmarked http://www.jamesriser.com/Magic/JamesRiserMagic.html, so it's the first page I hit on his site when I log on there. After I located them, I tried googling various forms of Micro cup, Micro traditional cup, etc., and that page did not come up in the first 20 or so unless I included Riser in the search term. Nice work, Jim. Posted: Feb 24, 2010 1:34pm BTW, the pearls appear to be about 3-4mm in diameter. That's very small! The cups appear to be about 13 mm in diameter and height. Overall, the stack is about 23 mm tall. That's some very nice work.

In addition to needing nimble fingers, a magnifying glass wouldn't hurt either!

Jim, what are the little red balls in the photos on your website? Those aren't pearls or bb's and they look like tiny micro sized pom poms.
And those cups are adorable. Did you actually spin these and roll those tiny mouth beads into them? If so, that's amazing! Like a psalm on the head of a pin! |

I've had a look at the pics on Jim's website - those aren't micro cups...they're nano cups!
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler
