I am working on a Ninja Ring routine using the cheap Royal 5" rings.
Man if I pinch my skin during a link one more time! AAARRRGGGGHHHH! Thanks for letting me vent : )

Here is a tip I got from Shoot Ogawa:
Take the key ring and put in position then take a playing card and adjust put it between the opening and you pinky so that it just holds the card in place. This is the proper position of the key ring. Your pinky will not get nearly the abuse now.

This is wonderful routine, do yourself a favor and try and get some better rings.
You will not regret it. Good Luck.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

Hey Mr. Bill and Professorwhut,
Thanks for the advice guys. I definitely want to get new rings. It's a matter of which ones (and unfortunately, price is an issue). Another thing I wonder about is the size of the rings. I have huge paws and wonder if I should try to get 6" rings instead. In the meantime I'll try out the playing card idea. Thanks, Jack

I have big hands too. I use the original gold ninja rings which are 4 or 4.5 inches and I have no problem. if you have access to power tools you could bevel the edges of the key opening and it facilitates the acrobatic moves. The ninja rings that shoot used to sell came this way.

Relax your grip!
even though you hold the k with the entire hand, try to grip with only the thumb which allows some pivot. keep a light touch and that should help. <tidbit> my wife and child both know the secret of the linking rings and have done/seen a crash link with ninja size'd rings. last week I was practicing with a cheap set of 12-inch rings and asked each of them separately to watch me do a crash link. NEITHER of them knew how I did it and asked to see it again. This proved to me that the illusion of a crash link, especially with large rings, is probably the greatest single magic moment you can witness close-up. The illusion is so strong that they no longer trusted their accurate knowledge on the subject. The distance between the 2 hands combined with an economy of hand movement (after much practice you can do the link with very little hand movement of either hand) is astounding even to eye the performer. To make that work, you really have to practice. Too many magicians (including Jeff McBride on his DVD) use a "hooking" motion and large arm movements with the k hand to do the work which looks really bad and not too deceptive. </tidbit>
