James, I always delete these requests as quickly as they come in. A buddy of mine in Ohio accepted an offer once - even visited the website being advertised. Everything seemed kosher, then two months into the agreement he began getting complaints from his clients and service provider about sex site spam coming from his website. Somehow, script in the advertising link had been mining emails from his contact page. Really hurt his rep.
I once accepted a link exchange with a local party planner I didn't know personally. She turned out to be very unreliable and unprofessional and I lost good clients who were ticked at me for "referring" her. I freely promote businesses I know and trust like my local magic shop and magic clubs. Aside from that, I don't take chances. My personal opinion...

As part of our partner referral program, we do offer compensation for referrals for magicians and entertainers who know a lot of people in the industry (these come via a special link we give web partners). But then again, we are a Magician and entertainer-centric site only, so that might now be what you mean . . . most of our advertising clients are referred to us from other magicians or entertainers directly . . . we just thought we might as well thank them and compensate those individuals for these referrals.
Helping out a good magician, who is not in your direct target market, is good for promoting the industry overall . . .

If you agree to that you might soon be selling an escort service, or phone sex as well as a magician on your web site.

Let's do like NASCAR and sell advertising space on our costumes!

Voice of dissent... Examine the request closer. Never turn down alternative revenue streams without a bit of investigation.

I'll throw in a couple of points here and side with pearljamjeff. Have a closer look. There are some relationships and revenue streams that can be developed
that will work for you. So don't dismiss the concept out of hand. Google Adwords for instance is a safer approach. You can filter out advertisers who compete against you or who reflect badly on your brand. I run these on a couple of my niche sites. They don't make much money, but they pay for my hosting. I know a few magicians who run advertising for their personal sponsors on their sites. Clothing companies, Auto Dealers etc. These can reduce the running costs of your business and can in many ways raise your profile. When we were doing public shows, I'd always try and get the printing company to put their name on the flyer or poster and request a discount on the invoice. Reducing the costs of running your business is one of the easiest ways of making more money from the business. timothy |
