I have been doing contact juggling (sphereplay) for over 5 years, but mainly as a side performance to magic. I am trying to put together a routine with different colored balls. Does anyone else mix magic and contact juggling? If so, any tips?

I think he would be good to contact. Here's a clip - fascinating... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT_p7eRLppY

Lawrens is really gifted and serious about this. This is not juggling, it is just pure magic

I've come up with a number of moves for productions of the balls during a contact routine. I've also come up with a nice little levitation illusion that can be done with an unprepared ball (ideally a clear acrylic) If you'd like, check out this video on youtube that someone was nice enough to put together of some of my older stuff. (Some of it practical, some of it not) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfS35dqaNfA
If you're interested in the levitation it's published on the third volume of my Encyclopedia of Contact Juggling videos. And it's actually quite easy to do. Apart from that, other ideas that you may want to consider is intigrating contact juggling with some other manipulative magic. Of course billiards is the most obvious, though you may want to go slightly larger than the average billiard balls used in the multiplying effects (unless you want to use a particular gimmik) simply because the smaller balls are harder to contact juggle, and aren't as visible to a larger audience if you're going to palm spin multiple balls. (And if you're going to palm spin multiple balls, use something smooth textured, as the common silicone used in higher end multiplying billiard routines have too much grip and it becomes very difficult to do any more than a two ball spin) Another idea is to use contact juggling in a ball and silk routine, so you can do vanishes, productions and penetrations through the silk while using various contact moves. And certainly the use of a certain gimmick or two to aid in barehanded vanishes might not be a bad thought either. Anyway I hope this post helps. Have fun.

Thank you for your kindness. My videos are available in europe, but if you're having trouble getting hold of a set, message me and we can work something out. I stand by the set and highly recommend it to anyone that wants to learn.
I just watched the routine you posted on youtube and I like what you are doing with some of the isolations in your routine. There are moments that look truly magical. I can think of a few moves that would fit in perfectly with what you are doing. Thank you again. -Matt

Matt,
It would be a real pleasure to exchange contact idea with you ^^ I also would be interested in your thinking of moves I could do... As I'm also pretty much advanced in multiball work right now, I don't know if I really want to purchase a full dvd just to learn a few moves ; But don't misunderstand me : your work is wonderful and anyone willing to improve his/her skills should have a look at your dvds ! (Actually a friend of mine did have one of them, so I was able to glimpse inside) |
