I remember picking this book up for the first time. I was in NY, Josh had just finished printing them and handed me a copy. I started looking through it, intending to read it on the plane... but got hooked it. 26! blew my mind. So did Reswinddled. And so did a LOT of other things.
I ended up blowing off my friends and sitting in a park, deck in hand, going through the book. My friends had fun without me... and I regret nothing. I voted it as one of my books of the year when it first came out, and I'll state for the record again- it's a MUST HAVE for anyone who wants to know what's going on in the world of good card magic today. I had a chance to review this the other night during the Magic Marketplace product review show and here were a few thoughts from the show...
Overall: It is SO obvious that Caleb Wiles is a worker. The 12 routines included in this booklet are pure commercial goodness! Initial thoughts: * The routines included vary from self-working to small packet to full blown poker demonstrations. This is nice for those looking to get a lot of bang for your buck. * Included here is THE version of Reset called ReSwindled. This is the version that Paul Harris uses and for good reason...this thing rocks! * The booklet is about 70 pages and is beautifully laid out. The writing is clear and the photographs are spot on in helping you pick up what you need to know to do the routines. Final thoughts: For the insane price of $20.00 you are getting solid material from a true working pro. ReSwindled (his version of Reset) is easily worth the price of the booklet. It's obvious that Caleb has put a lot of thought into his magic and the back of the booklet really says it all... "Magic Made For Real People" luke |

I found this book disappointing most of the effects required set ups. There should be a substantial amount of information on culls, etc. to arrange these set ups, false shuffles, and false cuts included in the book itself. I dislike referencing to other books and DVDs for necessary info. Perhaps this is the reason the book is inexpensive. It is not complete. When the spectator asks can I shuffle the cards? And is refused they realize there is a set up. There should be a section on spectator control so this is avoided.

Anyone that's worked with cards for any length of time has run across routines that require moderate to full deck stacks and already has strategies in place to deal with them. It isn't practical to assume that any book or DVD that uses a stack also needs to supply an exhaustive look at false shuffles, cuts, and culls. A good and reliable deck switch is another fantastic tool that lets us use full deck stacks from an apparently shuffled deck. There are too many strategies and techniques covering too wide a range of skill levels to make its inclusion viable in a book like this.
If someone doesn't already have strategies to deal with stacks, however, I can certainly understand how this would cause a sense of frustration. A related point is why are spectators asking to shuffle the cards? In my experience, 99% of the time it is because they don't feel the cards have been sufficiently randomized. If I'm using a full deck stack to start, I pull them out of the box and immediately start shuffling to short circuit that very question. If they are convinced that the cards are well and mixed they won't ask to further shuffle the cards. But what if they ask anyway? Well, again, most of us have already developed strategies to deal with that, too. What I'm trying to say is that your questions are excellent and we've all asked them at one time or another. It's just that this book shouldn't be the place that you look for those answers. If you're interested, I'd be happy to chat privately, or open another thread, on the options and we can come up with a few ideas based on your skill level and comfort level with the alternatives. Shoot me a PM if you'd like.

There should at least be one false shuffle and false cut described in this book. I would suppose the author has his own favorites. I would like to at least know one of these. If only by a reference direction.

Excellent booklet. I use 2 of the effects from this booklet all the time.
And I agree the booklet should not be the place to look for instructions of fundamental skills. In fact, if every small booklet includes exhaustive details of fundamental card skills and spectator control strategies, I'd be annoyed. |
