I prefer to do a little dusting and wiping down constantly throughout the year to keep the dust bunnies under control, while others wait until the first week of spring, bring out the giant vacuum and go to town.
I'm sure both approaches have their followers.

And some follow both
When spring hits, as it now has (hallelujah!), I take out the floor washing machine. Assemble it, clean it, mix the chemicals and, well...I wash the floors. Its really slow, need to empty the tank (and fill the other tank) every 10 minutes but geesh the house is clean afterwards. Though it takes two or three evenings to get it all done. But its a nice spring ritual I enjoy. One spring ritual I hate, is washing windows...and they're always filthy after the winter. That I usually put off as long as I can. A few years back, during a very warm sunny spring day, I was dusting around the house, back door wide open. I kept hearing a faint steady buzz, didn't really pay much attention to it, thinking its a distant wood chipper or lawn mower or whatever. I must have spent a few hours cleaning before I went to the livingroom (where the back door is) to see a humongous wasp building a nest in the stucco ceiling! It had done the base, about the size of a halved ping-pong ball. Cute, a one bedroom on our livingrom ceiling! Now I don't think we would have been able to find a way to peacefully live their together...

Easy solution for outside windows: get one of those cheap fertilizer sprayers that attach directly to the garden hose. (I got one for about $2 at Home Depot.) Take the deflector off. Now, instead of a spray, you should have a high-powered stream that will go a good 15-20 feet. Fill the container with Simple Green or another non-toxic cleaner, and just spray off all the dirt. If you've got a squeegie and a long pole, you can wipe them down after spraying.
Which reminds me, I should clean my windows this weekend, while I'm raking up all the leaves in the back. I really, really hate yardwork. (Hay fever can do that to you.) As for carpets, I pretty much just spot clean the big messes. Or leave 'em sit. With a dog and a 1-year old, stains are inevitable, and I don't want to use too many chemicals until my son's older and not crawling on the floor so often. I do try to vacuum every weekend. (I should be vacuuming twice a week, considering all the dog hair, but who has time?)

I actually use a hand-held pump sprayer to spray windshield washer fluid on the outside windows, fast but I still hate washing windows! LOL
With three-pane windows, I hate the 5 surfaces per window inside the house I need to wash...thats 96 glass surfaces in my case...But a bottle of red wine helps a lot! Thankfully we have hardwood and tile floors, so I can take to rugs to cleaners. Except the hallway rug, which is 20 feet long, but I can wash that with the floor washer right on the floor and just take it outside to dry.

It looks very similar to a Mexican ten peso coin.
