Hi All,
Was wondering where to get a shell for the Eisenhower coin and which is ther best for value and quality. After 30 years of magic I'm finally getting into bigger coins! :) |

Most banks in my area I've called around to in request of Eisenhower Dollar Coins have replied to me with answers of, "Oh we're sorry, we don't have any right now, but if you call back next week we might have some at some point...blahblahblah..."
I have recently found a coin shop in my area that let's 'em go at a fair price...face value. |

Value and quality will be opposite and opposing forces when it comes to these gems. :o) Hank Lee's or Penguin Magic sells low cost expanded IKE shells as well. Before I upgraded to Todd Lassen gaffs, I was using a lot of low cost expanded Ike Dollar size gaffs (ie.. exp shells, half shells, and flippers). If you have a eye for this, you will notice a distortion (either excessive flatness or bowing up/warpage effect) on the face of some of the low cost gaffs. These defects occur from improper set up in temperature, timing, pressure, speed, and suboptimal tools used in the manufacturing process. you will notice this more on Dollar size gaffs as compared to 1/2 dollar size gaffs because you have more surface area reflection in an Ike Exp shell. Maybe my perspective is distorted by the fact that I have been an engineer for 25 years, but you may want to visit your local Magic shop to take a look first. Compare the gaff closely next to a real coin in different lighting and angles. fit the exp shell over your coins to see if you can get a snug fit that does not rattle too much nor does not get locked in the shell. Lower cost gaffs have more inconsistency so you may find one that looks better than others. Or.....drop down the money for a high quality custom gaff set from Lassen that you will use for the rest of your life......if you do not drop it. :o)
