Aiming and steadying a common "strong" laser long enough to start a fire at a distance isn't easy. I think we're safe for the moment.
Although I can conceive of a few "voodoo" type magical effects that could benefit from a laser strong enough to burn -but they would have to be infrared or C02 type lasers, so as to be unseen -and then you run into the thousands of dollars...

Actually, I recall hearing about at least one military application for high-powered lasers. I think it's called ZEUS; it's mounted to an armored HUMVEE, and uses a high powered laser to remotely detonate explosives. A good way to clear ordinance with less risk to lives.
