Hello,
I am having big problems with my 2 euro folding coins for coin through bottle. I now have gone through 4 pairs, 3 from Tango, and one from a french manufacturer. Every time, I encounter the same problem. The problem is: when I extract the coin (I am doing this the standard way, I even align the crease with the opening for a smoother extraction ) after a couple of times, the inside golden part of the coin breaks loose from the silver part around it. If you are not familiar with 2 euro coins, look on google and you will see what I mean. This happens after only using it maybe 10 times. I have contacted the shop I got them from, and they said it was a manufacturing problem, and sent a replacement. Same problem with the replacement, so I contacted Mr. Tango himself, and he kindly sent a replacement also saying it was a manufacturing problem, this replacement was significantly better quality then the others, but once again, after using it for 10 minutes, it breaks. I am pretty sure this is NOT due to my handling, and even so, these coins should be able to withstand some abuse! Has anybody encountered similar problems? I'm sure you understand this is VERY frustrating. I can post pictures of the broken coins ( quite a lot of money has gone into this) to clarify what the problem is, but am not sure this is appropriate for exposure reasons. I post this to see if anyone else has the same problem, and am wondering if these coins actually get tested... I would appreciate any input, I'm not ready to give up on this routine just yet...! Thank you for your time. Nicholas. |

First off I want to make clear that this is not a direct complaint towards Tango. I have seen a couple of gaffed coins by now from different manufacturers, and the coin I have received directly from Mr. Tango appeared to be from extremely high quality. I believe there is a lot of effort and time put into the design of these coins, and in my opinion they are made very well. As well I would like to mention Mr. Tango has been very help full and direct in dealing with my problems, so kudos to the customer service.
Now I would like to make a very important point. I have no experience what so ever in making gaffed coins, folding 2 euro's specifically, but I am of the understanding that it is very difficult to work with 2 euro's, due to the inner and outer frame which is not present with UK or US coins. Because of this, the coin is fragile, and therefore it is NOT possible to extract the coin out of a bottle using the commonly used "sliding-out" method. So if you are planning on using a 2 euro folding coin for ctb, be careful, it will save you money!! lol Mr. Tango has sent a PM to me refering to sources for alternate methods. Regards, Nicholas |

I really advice to use same not violent method to take the coin out of the bottle, as John Carney and Geoffrey Durham use. Not only to prevent that the coin broke, in this way you will avoid that the rubber band brokes or may be the bottle. Once I broke a bottle shaking the coin inside.

I have the same problem with a french manufacturer. He told me to glue with a special glue the gold part. I do that, I'll see if the problem comme back.

Can't glue it as each part has to be very precise otherwise the crack is uneven and visible. Perhaps the manufacturers can do it which would probably be a better method then whatever they are doing atm. How are standard 2 euro coins put together? Cause I can't break them at all even if I try...
Coin number 4 just broke 9 days before my big show where coin through bottle is center piece. I've been extra careful and have used Carney's method for "softer" extraction and it still broke. I'm in a pretty sh*t situation as I have a show in 9 days without a back-up. I'm not gonna create another act because I have been working on this one for MONTHS...! Any advice or help would be appreciated... Thanks Nicholas |

Long tweezers! In the past I always used the shake-out method and it did damage to the edge of the F-----g coin. I remember seeing a routine by Lonnie Chevrie where he used a pair of tweezers to remove the coin. I now remove the coin in the same fashion.

Hello Nicholas,
Canadian Twoonie gaffs have similar problems. I had to glue the center piece in my Twoonie shell in place. It fell out. I used 2 part epoxy. I'm being really careful with my Twoonie flipper. Don't use it much because I'm afraid it my dislodge also. I'm thinking about a extra thin layer of epoxy though. I don't know how to get around the problem you're having, because it's a folding coin but I do understand the situation. Maybe careful glueing just might be the answer. 2 part epoxy works wonders. If glueing is the solution, I wonder why they are not manufactured like that. I want to be able to smash the coin around in the bottle, and it should not break, because I want to feel safe performing the effect. I use the carney method for extraction so the problem does not lie in abuse of the coin.
I might mess around with some glue and one of my coins tomorrow as I have a whole collection of broken ones I'll see what happens.. All the best, Nicholas |

All that I can think of is to strengthen the band that holds the gaff together. Here's a couple things you can try:
1- Double-band it. IOW use two of whatever band you are using. Can't hurt, really. 2- Try bands that you cut from a balloon. I have seen a couple posts here at the Café about just that. IIRC someone recommended that you use #240 or #260 balloons. You know, the long thin kind that you might use for making balloon animals? Slice some thin rings from the balloon of varying thicknesses and then try them one by one. See how they feel. Stronger bands would make the folder tougher to fold but the coin would sure snap back into shape quickly. Jim |

Perhaps you could change and put a bottle cap into the bottle instead?

J-mac the problem is not with the bands, I wish it was The problem is with euro coins that have a golden internal part that falls apart in folding coins. So basically the entire coin just falls.
Pete Biro I like that idea, and am thinking about it but I am not a fan just yet of using a folding cap to accomplish it, doesn't seem like the right method for me. I am also considering different methods for coin in bottle, as right now handling a folding coin feels like handling dynamite, it is just to *** fragile... You never know what you might come up with a little open minded thinking... Thanks for the suggestions guys... Nicholas |

Yeah-That's why I prefer solid coin gaffs, like liberty's and Morgans.
Don't have to worry about that silly center piece, like the Euros and Twoonies. The only thing that these coins are useful for is karate coin or cigarette through coin, but in the case of a Twoonie, it's more like finger through coin, which, by the way, Roy Kueppers makes. Jim |

I don't use dollar coins cause I live in europe, and even in America I believe they are pretty unfamiliar to most. Besides in the case of CTB borrowing a coin is definitely preferred!
I could use a 50 cent euro coin, but this presents presentational problems for me (presentation is that the smallest coin doesn't fit into the bottle (1 cent) and the largest coin (2 euro) does) It is a small change from 'largest' to 'larger' but it is still a difference. My main issue is that the 2 euro coins are simply not usable and I therefore ask myself why they are even being made, if anyone has success with them, performing on a regular basis please let me know HOW...! Oh yeah still have to work out a whole new effect for next week, better get to work! Take care, N |
