At least, I know some UK slang, although I've never been there. I don't have to ask why when a Brit says he's "p*ssed".

I would say it depends on where you are working. Jacket and tie for someplace nice. My restaurant gigs are are family friendly and busy. Lots of regular customers where I need to carry something new ( at least to them) and my preferred routines. I work in short sleeves or long sleeves rolled up, no jacket. I use a very nice looking leather pouch, ( gibriece I believe it is called, although I most likely mispelled it). It holds a lot and is also a great topit and switching aid. Many magicians cringe when mentioning an apron , but never has a spectator said " you know you really should be wearing something else". I can see all of my props and carry some heavy final loads. Even an extra pocket for all the tips! I have performed over 3000 gigs with this, so I think it works... at least for me.

Depending on how you dress, for out side walk around a good fishing vest really works great. Lots of pockets

Interesting post. I have found that when I am performing parlour or close-up I tend to use the pockets in my pants and sport or suit jacket. Just a tip... Leave the normal stuff out of your pockets for ease of use. Only place in your pockets what you will be using while performing.
Jay Sankey has a great 'fanny pack' style pouch which he markets for around $25.00. He has customized this pack to accomodate cards, thumb tips, coins, etc. Ideal for someone working in a T-Shirt or short sleeved shirt.

I'm in the market for a vest (as in Busker Gear's elegant vest but am not getting a reply from there). If anyone has a referral I'd be obliged.

Want to be a successful walk around performer? Learn how to do more, with less. The magic comes from YOU NOT YOUR PROPS! Goofy looking pouches and vests just make it look like you need a ton of stuff to perform. I know a professional performer who will show up for a strolling gig with one regular deck, a mental photo. deck, brainwave deck, folding quarter, cig through quarter, card to wallet, peek wallet and himber wallet. This is the wrong way to work.I work every week and do 3-4 hours of walk around with 2 decks of cards, a marker, Dean's set and maybe sponge balls or an egg bag. And the egg bag is only in case I have to work for a very large group and will usually only get used once a night, if at all. Along with this there are items that I borrow or take off the table. If you walk in carrying a case and leave it behind the bar or something that is one thing. I'll do this and leave a chop cup or cups inside and only do it for one table a night.

I work from my pockets almost exclusively (far cry from when I started... cutting back on your stuff is one of the first lessons learned the hard way... Pepka nailed it in the above post) but I do have a small shoulder bag thing to carry my C&B set, a drink and other things that are too big for my pockets. I also keep my silks and cards in there when not in use- another lesson learned the hard way due to the climate where I live.
When it's 100+ degrees, working with sweat soaked silks and cards is just... icky. Took me all of one day busking to figure that out. I also use a double sided close-up pad I made; it's covered with black felt on one side and white felt on the other. Why white? I found out the hard way at an outdoor strolling gig that after night falls and there's only ambient light/tiki torches/lighted pedestal tables to rely on... your props disappear onto your dark pad surface. So, night falls, I flip the board over and work on the white side. Little feet on both sides keep whichever surface is on the bottom from getting dirty. Has a handle hole, is lightweight and looks classy. I slip the strap of my bag through the handle hole to sling it around after I'm done.

I use some pocket extender, you can slip them inside your "inside pockets" and you have about 10 more pockets, do it both sides provides 20 pockets

Taoist,
I recently ordered a Buskers Vest. I too got no response in email, but my phone calls were immediately answered and responded to by Bobby Maverick. I ordered based solely on other customer comments. It is a slow process as each vest is apparently made to order. Im hoping for delivery in about 2 weeks. |

All my pockets are filled and the rest I try to find a secure place to stash a small close up bag.

First I try to use as less as possible props and make reuse as often as possible. Therefor I´m not the one having multiple faked deck of cards which can only be used for one effect. I have all of the items in my suits (a few additional pockets).
In special situations I do have a old style doctor bag, but this is not being used for walk around in larger environments |

Take a look at Joshua Jay's Transporter. That is really helpful for my walk around gigs.
