Is it best to store spring flowers in their opened state or in their closed state? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Well I just checked some fingertip flowers that have been stored in their box for the last few years, in closed position, and they sprung to life with no problem.

I don't understand what you mean by 'store'.
Short term store is just to neatly assemble and stack the flowers in groups. Cover with stiff cardboard and secure with a rubber-band. Long-term is the same but use string or paper band as rubber-band get hard and fall apart over time. Cut the stiff board square a little larger then the flowers to protect the leaves. If you position the board setting it triangle shape on the flowers, then secure. Tape will also work, but use a tape that will not dry out in time. Keep the flower ends from sunlight, as this will fade the color on the edges. |

I think considering that spring flowers have been stored in their folded state at the manufacturer's location, the distributor's location, and on the magic shop shelf for x number of weeks or months before being sold to the customer and still open into a decent bouquet fresh out of the package... I think it's safe to say that they can be stored in their folded state indefinitely. But why not do a controlled, empirical study?
Probably a lot depends on how compacted the flowers are in their folded state. If they are pressed into an extremely tight, compact bundle then the spring might lose some of its 'springiness." But if they're stored simply with a rubber band holding them in their folded state, I would guess they would be okay. Of course, a variable to consider is the quality of the spring flowers in the first place. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

My spring flowers have been stored for years and open just fine, too. I guess I'm laughing at this thread because now I'm wondering if any of us actually use them or do we just buy them and store them? Ha!

Gentlemen:
Thank you for your very informative and complete responses. They are a part of my kids show and I want to make sure that they will maintain their "spring" as long as possible. I now know what I need to do to make that possible. Thanks again. -Marty |

While on the subject of spring flowers... Years ago I recall a discussion somewhere about comparing spring flowers with feather flowers and how audiences might respond to them as being more or less real. In some ways I think spring flowers look much more like a bouquet than feather flowers do.
I always wanted to do a routine with spring flowers with Anita Bryant's "Paper Roses" as background music... part of an act with several tricks punctuated by a variety of pop songs, sort of along the lines of the Dickey Goodman novelty song "The Flying Saucers Are Real" Many years ago an advertising company consulted me about how magic could be used for an ADDY Awards banquet that was based on the theme of "The Magic of Advertising." In addition to performing my own banquet act, I suggested teaching the wait staff how to produce a bouquet of spring flowers to place on the banquet tables as a centerpiece while the guests were being seated. It all went over very well. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

I've had one between the pages of a magic book. Every few years or so when leafing through it always gives me a bit of surprise. Been about 18 years already.
