My copy of this new documentary just arrived from Amazon today, and I enjoyed it tremendously. It "stars" Jeff Dunham, Jay Johnson, and LynnTrefzger, but many more vents appear in it--Nelson, Winchell, Bergen, Wences, Worsley to name a few.
This is a very respectful look at ventriloquism and the people who perform it/love it. It's fascinating to hear how the greats think about this art, and I was inspired to re-examine aspects of my own act just by listening to their insights. There are many performance clips, including a number from "Two and Only," which are not otherwise available. There are also some wonderful Winchell clips from the early 50's which show how incredibly creative and talented he was. Tom Ladshaw provides valuable historical insights throughout. Ventriloquism and vents come out looking very good in this film, and that's a wonderful change. I think vents should go on a buying campaign to support this film. You will not regret purchasing it. I watched the DVD tonight as well.
Mr. Baker's review above is spot on! Everyone involved in this documentary should be very proud. Some of those Winchell clips were simply amazing. The Jimmy Nelson's moments are dreamy, Jay Johnson kills...this is a very entertaining documentary. Loved it! |

Mine is on the way from Amazon. I'm curious to see how the film was re-edited from the showing at the 2007 VentHaven Convention. I thought it was excellent then!

You all may recall that there was a fair amount of controversy around this film, with Jeff Dunham taking legal steps to block its release. Frankly, I can't imagine why. He comes across as funny, talented, well-spoken, and self-deprecatory.
Anyone else have any insight on this? Bob |

Bob,
It would be speculation. Suffice to say that Jeff and his lawyers had some issues. Not sure what the outcome was, but happy that the movie was released. Tom |

My copy arrived. Here are my random thoughts...
It has contributions from many fine talents, but my response is that I've seen all of them do better. It doesn't really capture the power of their regular acts. (This might be what Jeff objected to.) From the history they give on various vents, a non-vent might get the idea that people become ventriloquists to overcome painful circumstances in their childhood. I wish we could have seen Stevo Shilling and Ken Groves doing some of their acts. They were interviewed but we never saw them perform. I liked the coverage of Winchel and Nelson and Senor Wences. Overall I think it's worth having in the collection but it didn't wow me. Oliver |

My copy arrived last week from Amazon.com and my wife and me really enjoyed watching it. I hoped to see some footage of venthaven, but nonetheless this movie is really worth watching it.

I sure enjoyed all the Jimmy Nelson footage...that falsetto Danny voice sends me. This guy needs his own documentary.
