I'm in the market for a decent new/used set of combo cups/balls/chop cup. I've searched and these seem to be the two major contenders for my price range. Out of curiosity, for those of you that have or do own both, which do you prefer?
Thanks! |

Bazar de magia, I think they are better spun and heavier, you also have the option of aluminum, copper and brass.
I had copper and brass, and both were great |

My vote is for bazar, but they are pretty similar cups. See what kind of deal you can get, and I would go with the better deal. I think the cups are close enough in quality that the best deal should make your choice.
I also think the balls at morrissey are better, and if you order enough you get free shipping from canada (i think). |

I haven't messed with Morrissey's but I have a set of aluminum Bazar cups that I am enjoying. Like climber said, the chop ball leaves a little to be desired, but nothing you can't work through with a little imagination. PM me if you want specifics on the issue.

Hey! dmueller, that MAGIclimber! ......jk
One other importance feature about combo sets from bazar is you have to have a pretty big diameter ball to fully utilize the chop cup feature. This is due to the design of the cup. I cannot speak about combo morrissey sets, but I would guess its the same way. Hope this helps. |

Ah! Too much to consider. I know Morrissey makes some mini sets, which may help with the issue of ball diameter.
So, do you guys think that the extra cost of copper is worth it over aluminum? |

I prefer the look of aluminum personally. BUT that is 100% personal opinion. I have heard others recommend against mini sets for a starter, but I don't know your experience level. As I explained in PM, the ball issue is actually relatively easy to work around.

You have to read further than the name on the mini sets that Morrissey makes. They are not smaller overall. They are SHORTER. That's it. They are the same diameter as their large cups. Morrissey cups have gone through a number of changes since they first started making their combo sets.
The Bazar cups are a bit larger and hold a larger load. I would avoid aluminum in either brand. Aluminum is just too soft and too light for serious work, unless you can find some heavy walled aluminum cups. Then they will be expensive. The gaff is very evident in the Bazar combo cups. As far as using a cup from a combo set for a chop cup, that doesn't appeal to me. It's okay for learning, but the cup looks strange by itself. It has no context. I would not consider either set a final destination.

Bill, what set exactly would you recommend for a relative beginner? While no means a final destination, I'd like a set where the chop works nicely. I'm not set on Morrissey or Bazar, I just thought that those were probably best for my price range.

I have the brass combo set from bazar de magia and I'm happy with that. They're the right weight and are pretty strong
(Even tough, when I ordered the combo set I didn't expected that my wand would have done a different sound when tapping on the chop cup -_-") |

Is $50 for a copper Bazar de Magia combo set a good deal?

The cheapest copper Bazar de Magia combo set in Italy cost €64,94, so I would say it's a good deal...

I agree with Bill, that's a great price. I paid about $80 for the set I used to have. I'm using the Phoenix cups now.

I would post a reply to that, but we would get into one of the "no-no" areas of Magic Café discussions, i.e. politics. And that would do us no good at all.
