I live in Perth Western Australia and we can get some really hot days here. I have used a set of 2 inch Wooden Billiard Balls for years but I have always had problems with holding them as my hands sweat a lot when I perform. I have used rosin (or resin) to help with it but it is still not 100% safe. So I decided to buy a set of Fakini 2 inch balls but they have not completely solved the problem as when I get four balls in my fingers they still slip out.
Can anyone make any suggestions as to what I might do to assist with this problem? Thanks in anticipation. Pintirri |

Try rosewater and glycerin. Also check out this product at Denny and Lee Magic Studio:
http://www.dennymagic.com/cgi-bin/hazel.......m=006829 If Denny recommends it, it's got to be good. Also, are you sure the two-inch size is right for your size hands. There was a discussion a year or two ago about how to determine what size billiard ball is best for individual hands. Years ago, I came up with a self-concocted formula for the same problem. I mixed Mehron's Color Set Powder (theatrical make-up) with rubbing alcohol, about 3:1, alcohol to powder. I keep it in a small bottle with a squirt cap. It needs to be shaken very well before use, as the powder is not soluable in alcohol, and settles quickly. Just a couple drops does the trick quite well. I've let a few other magicians try it and they told me of positive results, too.
As an alternative, John Calvert told me about Chamberlain's Golden Touch Lotion. I tried some and it was pretty good for adding a grip. Not sure how it would do for sweaty palms.

Hi Pintirri,
You can use a product on the market called 'Golfers Grip' sold at most golf courses. I found that Stevens Magic has a new product they found for this problem as well, called 'Chamberlain Golden Touch' lotion. CLICK HERE You can also make your own; I am told, but I do not know the mixing percentages, out of Rose Water and Alcohol found at any pharmacy store. |

Your doctor can give you a perscription for the same chemical that is in antiperperent. There are people that suffer from sweaty hands. I explained my situation to my Doctor and he was able to help - It was applies via a roll on.
My hands have changed since then - I actually use a small amount of zinc sterate - yes fanning powder - rub it in and I am good to go. Never had much luck with the rose water/glycerin witch havel is ok but make hands too tacky for card manip. rosin made hands too gummie. My program I run the gammit - cards, billards, coins, thimbles, scarves - fanning powder works for me across the board - even in the humid south in the summer and artic cold in the winter (over dry hands are a problen too and fanning powder helps there too). I hope my experience with this helps you. |

Also - once your Fakini balls are broken in (shinny new coating worn off) - any moisture on your hands will make the moves more challenging.
If none of this helps - just try for giggles and grins dropping down to 1 3/4 size billard - see if that helps. Remember it isn't the size of your billards that make you a better magician (let the jokes begin on that one - lol) |

Hello Anatole and Michael
Thank you for your comments about dealing with my sweaty hands problem. I thought that the Fakini Balls may solve the problem but it doesn't seem so. Do you think using a lotion on the hands will interfere with the coating on the Fakini Balls? Thanks for the link to determine the ball size Anatole that will be handy to check out. The thing is I never have any problems when I am practicing, I can handle the balls easily, it's just when I get under pressure with a live performance that the problem occurs. Regards Pintirri |

Thanks Signor Blitz for telling me about various remedies. I think going to the doctor might be a good way to go. I never thought of using Zinc Sterate. I have used rosin and I agree it makes your hands gummie and it makes it difficult to perform other tricks. It is not good news to hear that when the coating wears off it may become more difficult. As you say dropping down a size may end up being the way to go.

I have more problems from dry hands than sweaty hands. I have used a product called "No Sweat" that helps to some degree. At least it helped some with facial perspiration when I was clowning. It might be worth a try. You might also try Witch Hazel. Now having said all that, I am not certain if it is safe to use with Fakinis.

Hello pintirri:
Years ago, I did a manipulation act with playing cards. I found that if I washed my hands with soap and water shortly before I went on stage, it made a big difference. It may be hard sometimes to find running water backstage, but I never had a problem with it. I got the idea from an old Magic TV show where Richard Ross mentioned that Ger Copper put his hands in cold water before performing. I tried that but it didn't work well for me - the soap made a big difference. Ron |

Do you spray the hairspray on your hands or the billiard balls?

First I spray Chamberlain's Golden Touch lotion on my hands and rub them together. This gives my hands just enough moisture for my hands. Then I spray hairspray on my fingers just where I need tackiness and let it dry. For me it works very well.

Hello Ron
I have been told by other magicians to use cold water just before performing but no one has mentioned soap and water. Thanks for that suggestion. Regards Ian |
